Mr E Whittington Passes Away
Rushden Builder’s Death – A Long Illness

The death occurred this (Friday) morning at his residence, Queen-street, Rushden, of Mr Edwin Whittington, aged 66, a partner of the firm of Messrs Whittington and Tomlin, builders, Rushden. Mr Whittington had been ill for about six months and had not left the house since last October. Dr Muriset and a specialist had treated the patient, but, in spite of their great skill and every care, Mr Whittington’s life could not be prolonged.

The deceased was a native of Clifton, Bedfordshire, but had lived in Rushden for 46 years. He and Mr J Tomlin were fellow employees of the late Mr Foskett. About 38 years ago Mr Whittington and Mr Tomlin started in business together as carpenters and builders, occupying premises a little lower down in Queen-street from the present premises. With Mr C E Bayes, the firm was responsible for some of the most prominent public buildings in Rushden, including the Free Library, the Park-road Baptist Church, Rushden Fire Station, and the High-street premises of the Rushden Co-operative Society. The firm joining the Rushden Master Builders’ Association, Mr Whittington occupied the presidential chair for two terms. He was for many years a member of the Rushden Conservative Association, but did not take active part in politics.

Besides the widow, there are three sons and seven grandchildren living to mourn their loss. One son, Mr Harry Whittington is the well-known footballer.
