Rushden Echo & Argus, 19th June 1931, transcribed by Kay Collins
Mr. Charles White

Mr. Charles White of 48 Queen-street, Rushden, a well-known Rushden Temperance worker, passed away on Friday last. Mr. White, who was 80 years of age, had suffered illness for about twelve months, and had been confined to bed for some time. His greatest work for total abstinence was in connection with the Independent Order of Rechabites. Joining the Morning Star Tent as far back as 1880, he became its secretary, and after many years’ service in that capacity, retired in 1923. He was also for some years treasurer of the Northamptonshire District and at the time of his death, held a position as trustee of the Rushden Tent. Other temperance organisations had his sympathy and interest, and in addition to being associated with the Rushden temperance Society, allied himself closely with Band of Hope work. He was secretary of the Rushden Temperance Band during the late Mr. William Skinner’s term as conductor.

Mr. White was born at Yelden, and on coming to Rushden at the age of 18, was apprenticed as a hand-sewn worker in the boot trade. He was for a great number of years employed by Messrs. John Cave and Sons, and last worked for Messrs. Nurrish and Pallett.

In his earlier days Mr. White showed a keen interest in cricket, and was at his prime during the time of such local celebrities as Messrs. John Claridge, George Denton and Fred Knight. Later years, however, saw him associated with bowling, and until his illness he held the position of secretary to the Thursday Section of the Rushden Spencer Park Bowling Club. Mr. White was a director of the Waverley Hotel. Besides the widow, Mrs. Naomi White, one son, the Rev. G. F. White, who holds a pastorate at Needham Market, is bereaved.

The funeral took place at Rushden on Tuesday afternoon, when the Rev. C. J. Keeler (of the High-street Independent Wesleyan Church) officiated, and a brief service was held in the Cemetery Chapel.
