Mr William Edward Lockie
Well-known Rushden man dies

Rushden Echo, 26th November 1965

LOCKIE—On November 17th, 1965, at 41 Robinson Road, Rushden, William Edward, aged 75 years, beloved Husband of the late Doris Mary Lockie, dear Father of Ted and Marian.—Cremated at Kettering on Saturday.

ONE of Rushden's most familiar figures died last week at his home. He was Mr William Edward Lockie, whose grey Lanchester car was a well-known sight in the town. Mr. Lockie, 41 Robinson Road, Rushden, was 74. Ten years ago he left his sheet metal working business, W. E. Lockie and Son, Fitzwilliam Street.

Mr. Lockie worked all his life in the business founded by his father and had lived at Rushden since he was 12 months old.

During the First World War he fought in armoured cars with the Royal Naval Air Service in France, Russia and the Middle East. As a result he was fluent in both Russian and French.

One of Mr. Lockie's many interests was music, and before the First World War he played with the Rushden Students' Orchestra and later played the saxophone for a local dance band.

Even after his retirement Mr. Lockie continued his active life. He was a keen swimmer and at one time took part in swimming galas at the Rushden pool. He stopped only 12 months ago. He was also an artist, specialising in water colours.

The funeral was at the Kettering Crematorium on Saturday.

Mr. Lockie leaves a son and a daughter. He was a widower.
