Rushden Echo, 28th April 1922, transcribed by Kay Collins
The Late Mr. Alfred Gilbert
A Sudden Death at Rushden – A Much Respected Resident

By the death of Mr. Alfred Gilbert, of 145 Wellingborough-road, Rushden, and until recently of 15 Victoria-road, several well-known Rushden families have suffered bereavement. Deceased, who had been ill for the last 12 months, succumbed to dropsy and heart failure, death taking place in the early hours of Monday morning with tragic suddenness. Mr. Gilbert was 65 years of age. Dr. Muriset was the medical attendant.

Ever since the opening of the C.W.S. boot factory at Rushden, the deceased had worked there, and during the whole of the 22 years or thereabouts he had never once “lost a quarter” of his own accord. A steady, reliable man of high character, he had gained the esteem of his fellow-workmen and all with whom he was brought into association. One of the earliest members of the Rushden Men’s Adult School, he was a regular attendant for many years. He was a member of the High-street Independent Wesleyan Church, and was for some years a sidesman, but he resigned the position recently. A member of the old Rushden Tradesman’s Club, he remained with that organisation until it was abandoned some years ago.

Mr. Alfred Gilbert was a native of Rushden, and was related to several old Rushden families. He was the eldest son of the late Mr. John Gilbert, who died a few years ago at a ripe old age at Kingsthorpe, where he had been living with his daughter, Mrs. Love, since his removal from Rushden. Mrs. John Gilbert was a Miss Wilmott, a well-known Rushden name. Mr. Alfred Gilbert married Miss Lovell, of Wellingborough, and for his widow and family the deepest sympathy is felt in their very sudden bereavement. There are two daughters—Mrs. Bridgeford and Mrs. Roberts—and one son, the other son being killed in the war. Deceased also leaves three sisters (Mrs. William Ablett, Mrs. Love, and Mrs. White), his only brother, Mr. Herbert Gilbert, having died in Canada a few years ago.

The funeral took place on Monday, the Rev. C. J. Keeler officiating.
