The Rushden Echo Friday 30th May 1919, transcribed by Susan Manton
Death of Mr. John Gilbert
Rushden’s Oldest Native - Nearly Ninety Years of Age

The death took place on Sunday last of Mr. John Gilbert, a native of Rushden. Deceased, who was the oldest Rushden man, would have been 90 years of age if he had lived until June 25th next. For the last few years he had resided with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. R. Love, of the Queen Adelaide Inn, Kingsthorpe, but he frequently visited his Rushden friends and he was in Rushden as recently as three weeks ago. Death resulted from a cancer in the leg.

The late Mr. Gilbert was the oldest scholar who had gone through the Rushden Baptist Sunday School. For 40 years he worked for the late Mr. Benjamin Denton and for Mr. George Denton as a finisher (out of doors) and in his early days he used to make boots for the late Mr. Cave. Many years ago he lived in High Street, in a cottage on the site now occupied by Messrs. Phipp’s warehouse and next to the Railway Hotel. Afterwards he moved to Oswald Road and subsequently to Victoria Road. His wife died about 25 years ago. For many years he was a member of the now defunct Rushden Tradesmen’s Benefit Society. He leaves one son(Mr. Alfred Gilbert of Victoria Road Rushden) and three daughters – Mrs. William Ablett of Victoria Road, Rushden, Mrs. R. Love of Kingsthorpe and Mrs. C. White of Rushden. One son, Mr. Herbert Gilbert, who had been a soldier, died a few years ago in Canada, and one daughter, Mrs. Saxby Groome, passed away some years ago.

The funeral of the deceased took place at the Rushden Cemetery on Wednesday, the body being brought from Northampton and taken to the residence of his son, Mr. Alfred Gilbert. The Rev. C.J. Keeler officiated. The body was enclosed in a coffin of polished elm with massive brass fittings.

The mourners were: Mr. Alfred Gilbert and Mrs. William Ablett (son and daughter), Mrs. R. Love and Mrs. C. White ( daughters), Mr. R. Love and Mrs. A. Gilbert ( son-in-law and daughter-in-law), Mr. C. White and Miss L. White (son-in-law and granddaughter) and Mr. Archie Ablett and Mrs. W. Roberts (grandson and granddaughter.) the wreaths bore the following inscriptions:

“In loving memory from Alfred and Bessie and grandchildren, Nellie, Alfred and Florrie – At rest.”

“In loving memory of dear father from Jane; also from the grandchildren Laura, Edith, Oliver (Aberdeen U.S.A.) and Archie. – Peace perfect peace.”

“To our dear father, from Alice and Dick. – Make him to be numbered with thy saints in glory everlasting.”
