Rushden Echo, 4th October 1918, transcribed by Kay Collins
Miss Adela Marriott

Obituary—We deeply regret to report that Mr. and Mrs. Robert Marriott, of Rushden, have suffered a very grievous blow by the death, which took place suddenly at Smedley’s Hydro, Matlock, of their eldest daughter, Miss Adela Marriott. It appears that Miss Marriott left home on Thursday last week with her brother, Capt. R. Allan Marriott, M.C., who recently returned from Palestine on short leave for a brief holiday, and on Monday morning she was making preparations to proceed to Durham when she died suddenly from heart failure. For the past year or two the late Miss Marriott has been engaged in scholastic work at Durham, and during her residence there has taken an active interest in the work of the Church. Much sympathy is felt with Mr. and Mrs. Marriott in their sudden bereavement. The funeral took place at Rushden yesterday afternoon amidst many signs of sympathy and respect. The first portion of the burial service was conducted at St. Peter’s Church, by the Vicar (Rev. A. J. Meakin) who also officiated at the graveside. The sacred edifice was quite full, the congregation including many intimate friends of the deceased. The body was contained in an elm shell enclosed in a coffin of polished oak with brass furniture. The breat plate the inscription:-

Adela Marriott.
Died September 30th 1918.
Aged 27 years.

The family mourners comprised: Mr. and Mrs. R. Marriott (father and mother), Capt. R. A. Marriott, M.C. (brother) and Misses Evelyn and Helen Marriott (sisters), Pte. S. H. Marriott, Artists’ Rifles (brother), Misses Mary and Betty Marriott (sisters). A number of close relatives also followed, and a profusion of beautiful floral tributes to the memory of the deceased were placed on the grave. The ladies of the family did not attend the committal portion of the obsequies. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Messrs. Whittington and Tomlin.
