Obituary- It is with deep regret that we record the death of Mr. Stephen Harris, which took place on Thursday last from cancer of the stomach. He was 55 years of age, and leaves a widow and seven children. His life work had laid at the Old Baptist Chapel, with which church he was connected for 30 years, having been 14 years Sunday school teacher, and 16 years superintendent of the school. On Sunday last a memorial service was held in the afternoon at which the whole of the school assembled. Mr. Clarke, the deceased fellow's superintendent, gave a short address, after which the Rev. W. J. Tomkins spoke to the children on the life and character of the deceased.
The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon. The hearse was preceded by the Rev. W. J. Tomkins, together with the whole of the teachers connected with the Old Baptist Chapel, and also deputations from the Co-operative Society and from the Rechabite Club. A large number of people gathered at the cemetery, where the service was conducted by the Rev. W. J. Tomkins. In a short address the rev. gentleman spoke of the deceased as a loving father, a true friend, and a consistent Christian. There was a large number of floral tributes, including one from the Old Baptist Sunday School. We understand a permanent wreath has also been subscribed for by the teachers and scholars of the school, which will be placed on the grave. The arrangements for the funeral were satisfactorily carried out by Mr. H. Knight, Newton-road.
