Death of Mrs Edward Campbell Browning

Formerly of Rushden House

Heart Failure Following Pneumonia

The death occurred at ‘Hove Dene’, Hove, near Brighton, on Sunday, of Mrs Browning, aged 80, widow of the late Mr Edward Campbell Browning MA JP, the deceased lady having succumbed to heart failure, following pneumonia.

Mr Browning and his family took up residence at ‘Knuston Hall’ in 1897 on his retirement from the firm, Messrs Twiss and Browning, Wine Merchants (which his father founded in1814), and five years later he bought Rushden House, where he lived until the early years of the war.  A son, Major James Alexander Browning, Queen’s Bays, was killed in the early days of the war and Mr Browning died in December 1914.  Shortly afterwards the widow and daughters removed to Hove.

Mrs Browning, formerly Miss Alice Louisa Pratt-Barlow of Hyde Park Gate, London, and Mr Browning were married in 1873.  Of the marriage there were six children.  Major J.A.Browning – Mr R.C.Browning – the late Mrs F.J.Simpson (first wife of Major F.J.Simpson, Town Clerk of Higham Ferrers) – Mrs Terry Short – Miss Mary and Miss Rosa Browning.  Mr Jim Simpson and Miss Nance Simpson of Higham Ferrers, are grandchildren.
