Lipscombe Family
Charles Epsom Lipscombe was born in Wycombe on 2nd July 1878, son of Joseph Hedges Lipscombe & Bethia (nee Stevens).
He married Bessie Bayes (b1887) in 1909, daughter of Charles, a shoe finisher, & Zelpha who were living in Little Street.

He enlisted as Private Lipscombe (3891) in the 4th Northants Regiment Territorial Army on the 2 nd March 1915. He was 5 feet 4½inches tall, with blue eyes and dark brown hair, and aged 36.

Having served for 1 year and 185 days, including service in the Mediterranean for 127 days, he was discharged as medically unfit on 20th September 1916. Seven days later he was given a certificate, based on his military record, stating that he was ‘Honest, sober & intelligent’, to present to prospective employers.

He applied to the Royal Hospital Chelsea, for a pension in October 1916. At that time he was living at 14 Sussex Place.

A pension for life was granted to Charles on 27th November 1928 due to his disablement being assessed as 40%. By this time he was living at 63 Irchester Road.

His death certificate states he died of a cerebral haemorrhage on 26th May 1944 at the age of 65. His daughter Minnie Jones was present at the death, at home. His occupation at that time was boot finisher, but in the 1920's he was a shoe salesman for C Bull & Co.

Another daughter, Gladys Lipscombe was in the Land Army and enlisted in October 1940, having formerly worked at C W Horrell Ltd. Gladys was based at Willmott’s Farm at Knuston.
