Crick & Patenall

This notebook was given to me by Bill Patenall of Queen Street, Rushden, whose great, great grandfather, Nathan Crick, was to go into partnership with his other gt.gt.g.fa. in about 1890 until 1928, when the firm went broke. I think these are Crick's earliest records when he was trading on his own in his outhouse workshop in Orchard Place, Rushden.

This little note book was kept by Nathan Crick from 1870 until 1889 including when he began his shoemaking before going into partnership. It contains miscellaneous notes on the weather, Spiritulaism and his business, with some interesting weekly accounts. It is from these accounts we can see how the business began and grew. Nathaniel was most likely cutting out the shoes and sending them to outworkers to sew and finish.

Yes, dont I very often make you think of many different things from what you used to when you see any Person dont you always reckon them up & you are generaly right & if not I always work on your mind that you see you are A little wrong but I will always guide you in your work.

Left Rushden to live at Wellingborough Nov 3rd 1873 & returned December 29th 1873.

A severe Thunder Storm visited Rushden August 3rd 1879 Sunday morning from 12 until 4.

The Winter of 1878-79 cold, nine weeks Frost from early in December to February. Thermometor 14 deg below Freezing. The Summer of 1878 was hot 100 18.

The Birth of John Clare Helpston

At the meeting of the two streets stands a Cross, in A Low Hut on High St. John was born on 13 July 1793. John keeping Sheep on Helpston Heath. Glinton School. James Merreshaw ... Blue Bell. The Summer of 1879 was very wet & cold the Thermometer registered 100 deg only once that was before Whitsuntide.

The Winter was very severe we had eleven Weeks frosts from November 1879 to February 1880.

My father James Crick was an Hawker and travelled with a Poney & Carte.

Saturday Nov 16th 1879 Sharp Frost & Snow on the ground as Father did not come home me & T. Knight turned out to look for him & found him in Bead at Dean, returned home 4 a.m. Thermometer 11 deg. or 21 frost.

1880 the season was Whet & cold untill Harvest
12 weeks of fine warm weather. Therm not higher than 100 12 deg then whet again the succeeding winter was again Sharp but did not last so long Feb 1881.

Therm 11 deg or 21 of frost.

1881 Sunday May 8th. Therm 95 deg 13th 100.
30 May Therm 104 deg.
31 Therm 104 deg July 4th 110.
5th July 112 deg.

For the year ending Dec About 26 Thousand Pairs of boots and shoes. Receipts Eight thousand pounds, profit about six thousand pounds.

[This may have been an estimated shoe production in the town?
From his own accounts N Crick had made 23 thousand pairs in 1888 with £32 profit so perhaps he intended to write 260 thousand pairs?]
