Mr Francis A. Channing - Born 1841 - died 20th February 1926

He visited Rushden many times, during his term as Liberal member for East Northamptonshire, 1885-1910. He spoke at many meetings, including the Trade Union Club.

In the 1900 Parliamentary election, his visit to the Public Hall was described as “the most remarkable political demonstration ever seen in Rushden.”

His last term in 1910 East Northants General saw him re-elected with 8,679 votes – a majority of 1,877.

Mr. G. H. Parkin asked Sir Francis if he could do something on behalf of an old soldier, as he was unable to work. Mr. Gilbert served about twelve years in the forces, and contracted fever whilst on service, and was unable to re-enlist. Sir Francis did so, and the War Office eventually granted a pension of 8d. a day.

A book was compiled, and presented to Sir Francis on his retirement from politics in 1910, containing signatures of his loyal supporters in Rushden.

He was made Baron Channing of Wellingborough in 1912.
