Children of William's marriage:
John Bates (1848 Podington 1932 Rushden) married Ellen Cross (1846, 1925 Rushden) in 1877. John and his family lived in Montague Street. In Rushden cemetery is the memorial inscription: In loving memory of Ellen the dearly beloved wife of John BATES died May 1st 1925 aged 79 years. Peace perfect peace. Also of John BATES who died November 1st 1932 aged 84 years. Ellen’s obituary was reported in the Rushden Echo on Friday 8 May 1925 and John’s 4 November 1932.

Children of grandson John's marriage:
Annie Elizabeth Bates (2 August 1878). She was at South End School from 16 June 1885 until 29 May 1891. Annie was a boot machinist, married Herbert Henry May (?1875 Kettering, 1916 Chatham) on 4 April 1904 in Park Road Baptist Church. They lived at 28 Montague street, Rushden and Herbert worked at Messrs Jaques and Clarke’s boot factory in Rushden; he was a member of St John’s Ambulance Association. He was in the Royal Naval Sick Berth Reserve during the Great War and died at Chatham of miliary tuberculosis on the 23 February 1916 after an illness of 15 weeks. He was buried in Rushden on Tuesday 29th February as reported in the Rushden Echo on March 3 1916. Annie married again, to ‘Len’ Leonard Baxter (1867-1940) in 1926. Leonard died aged 73 years and was buried on Rushden cemetery on 5 July 1940.
Emily Jane Bates (7 January 1881). She started at South End School on 1 May 1887. Emily was a boot fitter and married Thomas Hollowell Surridge on 5 August 1905 in Park Road Baptist Church. He was born in 1881 and died aged 47 years in 1929. He was buried in Rushden cemetery on 13 April. The inscription on his grave: In loving memory of Thomas Hollowell (Tom) the dearly loved husband of Emily Surridge died April 10 1929 aged 47 years. Sweet remembrance.
Jesse Bates (1884 Rushden). He entered Alfred Street School from the National School 29 August 1892 until 1 October 1897 when he left to enter the ‘shoe trade’. However, he was a cabinet maker’s apprentice at age 15. He married Laura E Page in 1910.
William ‘Willie’ Bates (29 Aug 1889). He entered Alfred Street School from Moor Road Infant School 11 May 1896 until 29 August 1902.

Mary Bates (b?1851 Podington).
Edward Bates (1855 Podington), a labourer. Edward married Mary Maile on 27 September 1880 in St Mary’s Church, Rushden. He died on 31 March 1891, aged 36 years, and is buried in Rushden.
Matthew Bates (1857 Podington, 1931 Rushden) was born on31 May 1857 in Podington. He was a labourer, riveter and later a shop dealer. He married Jane Campion (1856 Rushden, 1938 Westcliffe on Sea) on 27 September 1876 in St Mary’s Church, Rushden. Matthew was involved in a legal case with Mrs Harry Sharpe in 1905-1906 (see transcript). [also a burglary 1924] Matthew died on 5th April 1931 at 24 Essex Road, Rushden of cerebral thrombosis, myocardial degeneration and arteriosclerosis. Horace Anderson his son-in-law was present at the death. His death was reported in the Wellingborough News on Friday 10 April 1931: Bates – On 5th inst, at 24 Essex Road, Rushden, Matthew Bates, aged 73 years. Jane was living at 78 Tintern Avenue, Westcliffe-on-Sea, Essex when she died on 5th October 1938. Probate was granted in London on 6th January to Lloyds Bank. Her effects were £8418 8s 10d and was resworn as £8529 4s 7d. She left four cottages and workshop in Spencer Road, Rushden (nos 1, 3, 5 and 7) to her daughter Mary Elizabeth Howland. To her son John she left the cottages (nos 4, 6, 8 and 10) and the warehouse in John Street, Rushden. To be equally divided among his children on his death. To her son Walter she left the cottages and shops (nos 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14) in Ealing Terrace, Washbrook Road, Rushden. To be equally divided among his children on his death. To Mabel she left the cottages and shops (nos 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9) in Ealing Terrace. In Rushden cemetery is the memorial inscription (on the same grave as Dolly Bates): In loving memory of Matthew BATES who passed way 5th April 1931 aged 73 years. Thy will be done. Also of Jane beloved wife of the above who passed away 5th October 1938 aged 82 years.

Children of her grandson Matthew's marriage:
Mary Elizabeth ‘Polly’ Bates (4 Aug 1877 Rushden-6 October 1959 Rushden). She entered South End School from the Board School on 3 October 1887 until 10 October 1890. Mary married Frederick Howland on 5 August 1902. In the Rushden Echo August 8th 1902 the marriage is recorded: At the Succoth Baptist Chapel on Tuesday, by Mr J Bennett, Frederick Howland (High Wycombe) to Mary Bates. They had one son, Bernard Reginald Howland (1912 Rushden-1935 Rushden). He died aged 23 having been a ‘cripple’ since his birth. His death was reported in the Rushden Echo on 26 July 1935 and he was buried in Rushden cemetery on the 25 July 1935. The memorial inscription on the grave states: In loving memory of Bernard Reginald HOWLAND who fell asleep 23rd July 1935 aged 23 years. Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God. Also Mary Elizabeth his dear mother who fell asleep 6th Oct 1959 aged 82 years.
John ‘Jack’ Thomas Bates (2 Sept 1879 Rushden). John entered Alfred Street School from the Infant Department on 31 May 1886 until 5 June 1891 when he left ‘for work’. John married ‘Nance’ Annie Elizabeth Tilley in 1900.

Doris Mabel Bates (1901-1908). In Rushden cemetery is the memorial inscription: In loving memory of Doris Mabel (Dolly) the dearly loved grandchild of Matthew & Jane BATES who fell asleep July 2nd 1908 aged 6 years & 9 months. Jesus called a little child.
John Bates (1903-1975). He married Kathleen who died aged 95 years was buried on 17 March 1997 in Rushden. In Rushden cemetery is the memorial inscription (on the same grave as Dolly Bates): In loving memory of John BATES died 10th March 1975 aged 72 years loving husband of Kathleen and a dear father. Never more than a thought away.

[George] William Bates (22 Nov 1881 Rushden). He entered Alfred Street School from the Infant Department on 14 May 1888 until 7 December 1894 when he left to undertake ‘shoe work’. George married ‘Nellie’ Ellen Catharine Brawn in 1904. Ellen was born about 1885. They lived in Wellingborough.
Mabel Ann Bates (1885 twin Rushden). Married Horace N Anderson in 1922. They lived in Westcliff-on-Sea. No children.
Walter Henry Bates (1885 twin Rushden, 1960 Northampton). Married Martha Jane Westnutt (1885 Rushden, 1972 Rushden) in Wellingborough in 1908. The marriage was reported in the Wellingborough News on Friday 14 February 1908: Bates-Westnutt – On the 6th inst., at All Saints’ Church, Wellingborough by the Rev. W E Terry, Water Henry Bates to Martha Jane Westnutt. Walter was living at 7 Prospect Avenue, Rushden at the time of his death on 3rd May 1960 at the General Hospital, Northampton. Probate was granted in Peterborough to his widow Martha on 3rd June. His effects were £2837 4s 8d. Martha was living at the same address at the time of her death on 17th April 1975. Thomas Albert Bates (1917 Rushden, 2008) married Gracie (1915-1991); no children. Thomas Albert was named for 2 of his mother’s brothers killed in the Great War (Thomas Westnutt, died in 1914 and George Albert Westnutt, died 1916). Sapper Thomas Albert Bates was called up on 23 February 1940. His address at the time was Fairmont, 7 Prospect Avenue and he was working at John White Ltd. He served with the Royal Engineers. Tommy died on 17 August 2008. |

William Bates (1860 Podington, 1891 Rushden), a labourer, married Damaris Ellis on 27 September 1880 in St Mary’s Church, Rushden. William died on 23 March 1891, aged 30 years, and is buried in Rushden. Damaris, William’s widow, married David Desborough in 1897. David had previously been married to Rosa Hill (1872-1896) and had at least two children, Eleanor and Sidney Desborough. Both David and Damaris died in 1922, aged 52 years and 69 years, respectively.

Florence Bates (4 April 1881 Rushden). Florence attended South End School starting 1 May 1887. She married Robert Conrad Timpson on 16 March 1903 in St Mary’s church, Rushden.
George Bates (1883 Rushden, 1948). George died aged 64 years and was buried in Rushden cemetery on 2 November 1948.
Herbert Bates (1887 Rushden, 1917 France). The Rushden Echo (20th Oct 1917) reports the death of Herbert Bates, son of William Bates, native of Podington, who died 26 years previously, and Damaris Desborough of Crabb Street. He was in the Suffolk Regiment, and had worked at Bull & Clayton and at the Knight & Lawrence shoe factory.
Frank Thomas Bates (1890 Rushden, 1953 Rushden). He married Lily Franklin in 1907. He died on 29 September, aged 64 years, and is buried in Rushden. His death was recorded in the Rushden Echo 2 October 1953: Bates – Suddenly on Sept. 25th at 73 Harborough Road, Rushden, Frank Thomas (Dick), beloved husband of Lily Bates, aged 64 years - Interred at Rushden on Tuesday. Lily was buried in Rushden cemetery on 9 February 1960, aged 74 years.

Charles Bates (?1869 Podington, 1949 Rushden), a shoemaker, married Julia Underwood (1868 Yardley Hastings, 1932 Rushden) in 1887. Charles was a member of the Rushden Urban Council and president of the Rushden branch of the National Union of Boot and Shoe Operatives. In Rushden cemetery is the memorial inscription: In loving memory of Julia beloved wife of Charles BATES who died July 14 1932 aged 58 years. In the midst of life we are in death. Re-united. Also of Charles BATES who died October 18th 1949 aged 81 years. See Julia’s obituary in the Rushden Echo 15 and 22 July 1932.

John Edward Bates (1888 Rushden, 1915 Rushden). His death was recorded in the Rushden Echo Friday 9 April 1915: The death took place on Sunday evening at 8 Denmark road, of Mr John Bates, aged 27, eldest son of Councillor and Mrs C Bates. The funeral took place on Wednesday at the cemetery.
Charles William W Bates (1889 Rushden). Charles is reported (by Uncle Tommy) as having a daughter Florrie who married a Richardson. (a Florence Mary Bates (b1900) married Charles A Richardson in 1925)
Herbert Henry Bates (1894 Rushden). He married Rose Olive Freeman in 1922. They had at least one daughter, Violet.
