| Mr. Herbert Ernest Bates, the well-known Rushden author, was married on Saturday to Miss Marjorie Cox, at the Park-road Wesleyan Church, Rushden, the Rev. B. J. Harris (former minister of the Wesleyan Church) and the Rev. J. W. Brough (present minister) conducting the ceremony. The bridegroom is the elder son of Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Bates, of 15, Essex-road, Rushden, and the bride the only daughter of Mrs. Cox [nee Warren], of 102, Harborough-road, Rushden, and the late Mr. Cox. The bride, who was given away by her brother, Mr. Bertram Cox, was prettily attired in an ankle-length gown of flowered ninon, with hat and shoes to match. Her bouquet consisted of pink and cream roses and fern. Miss Edna Bates (sister of the bridegroom) and Miss Kathleen Whitehall, of Northampton (friend of the bride) were the two attendants. The former wore an ankle length frock of pale blue voile with a hat and shoes to match, and the latter an ankle length gown of pink voile with hat and shoes to match. Both carried bouquets of pink and mauve sweet pea with fern. Mr. Harry Byrom, M.A., of London, who is a friend of the bridegroom, ably carried out the duties of best man. Mrs. S. Woods, of Higham Ferrers, officiated at the organ and played the Wedding March. A reception was held at the bride’s home, and afterwards the happy couple left for Little Chard, Kent, where they now reside. Mrs. Bates travelled in a flowered voile frock, fawn coat with hat and shoes to match. Mr. and Mrs. Bates were the recipients of many useful presents, including a bed-spread from the bride’s fellow workers at Messrs. Horace Wright, Summit Works, Rushden, and a silver cake basket from the Baptist Sunday School. The bridegroom received a pair of cloisonné vases from the Cricket Club, in which he held the position of vice-captain of the Thursday team. Messrs. H. Scroxton supplied the motors. |
