Rushden Swimming Gala

M. Hillyer, of Northampton Amateur Swimming Club, put up a record time of 58.2 seconds in the boys' 100 yards free style county championship, swum at Rushden Swimming Pool last night, during Rushden Swimming Club’s annual gala.

Second was J. Freeman, also of the Northampton Club, third N. Bailey, Kettering Swimming Club, and fourth W. Gerrard, of Rushden Swimming Club.

The previous record for this county event was 58.4 seconds.

The awards were presented during the evening by Mrs. D. E. Shrive, chairman of Rushden Urban Council, who was accompanied by Mr. Shrive. Also among the special guests at the gala were Mr. D. Ward, president of the Northamptonshire ASA, and Mrs. Ward, and the Rushden Carnival Queen of Industry Miss Jacqueline Case, and her attendants Miss Janice Lee and Miss Jennifer Wynd. The main award of the evening, the "390" Shield, for the most points was won by two sisters, Barbara and Jackie Houghton, who both succeeded in winning three events gaining nine points each.

A relay race between teams from Denton's of Rushden Swimming Club resulted in victory for Denton's, who were awarded the John White Cup.

One of the highlights of the evening was the presentation of a cheque for £100 by the vice president of the Rushden Swimming Club, Mrs. C. Clark, to the treasurer of the Rushden Swimming Pool Improvement Fund, Mr. R. Lett. It is hoped to raise enough money to cover the pool so that swimmers can train throughout the year.
