Memories of Judy Austin
(Nee Gell), 2011

In 1947 2nd Rushden St Mary's Brownies met in a hall in Coffee Tavern Lane. The Brown Owl was Norah Elliot (Nee Swann) helped by Jean Mitchell and Eileen? We had church parade every 2nd Sunday of the month and produced several plays at the Institute and gave garden party entertainment. When Nora Elliot became ill a Miss Covington took over the pack.

Later in 1951/1952 the Guides were taken over by a Miss Slater (I think) and later by Kathleen White (nee Knight). We also produced plays in the Institute. Two friends of Kathleen White in later years helped to QM and MO for us at camp. Previously we had camped with 1st Rushden Guides at Blacklands. The two friends came from Nottingham.

Kathleen White started a Ranger Unit for the older girls in the "Forget Me Not" Patrol. Sorry I cannot remember much about this as I was the pack leader at 2nd Rushden Brownies with Mrs Muriel Maidwell. Julie West was a Cadet with the 2nd Rushden Guides.

In 1960/61, along with Carol Brooksby (nee Odell) we started 5th Rushden Brownies in the Scout Hut. Later June Head helped between 1972 and 1975 (I think.) June then went to help with the 2nd Guides. We continued to meet all through the power cuts. Later we moved to Moor Road Youth club with Linda Tallon and Debbie McGrath as Assistant Leaders.

The 5th Rushden Brownies went on Pack holiday with a Wellingborough Pack to Threefold in Castle Ashby in 1975 and Later the pack went on its own to Threefold and MacQueen House at Twywell.

I left the pack in 1978 and in 1979 started 3rd Rushden Rangers at Moor Road Youth Club. I used to QM for Mrs Lily Anderson and Gill Sharp when 5th Rushden Guides went to camp.

We had a good Ranger Unit and did lots of outdoor activities, gaining several D of E Awards and Ranger challenges. We also had girls selected for trips abroad, Italy and Sweden on a boat. The girls gained various Ranger Certificates such as Explorer, Fire fighter andChef and several of them were Young Leaders or Cub Instructors.

I left Rushden in 1994 to go to Zimbabwe.
