News 1962 and 1967

Friday May 11th, 1962

The 3rd Rushden ‘St Peter’s’ Scouts and Cubs held an “Open Night” in the Church Room, Midland Road, on Friday May 11th, 1962, at 7.30pm. The Group Chairman, Mr W J Anker, welcomed parents and friends (some 90 in number) and especially Dr S Hughes (County Commissioner), Mr D Winters (District Commissioner), Mr G Marriott (President of the Local Association), and Capt. Ronald Dennis (Church Army) to which the Group is affiliated.

The Cubs presented demonstrations of Test Work and Games – Balancing, skipping, etc.  This was followed by the presentation of the “Crossed Keys Badge” of St Peter’s to all full members of the Troop and Pack by the Rev W G Muir (Vicar), permission having been granted by Boy Scout H.Q. for these badges to be worn on the points of scarves.

The Group Chairman gave a brief resume of the work of the Group during the past year which included raising fund and the purchase of three Patrol Tents, a Dining Marquee, Butane stove and other camping equipment.  Thanks were expressed to Mr C Freeman, Mr Clark, and Mr Griffin for transporting gear to and from camp sites during the year. The Secretary, Mrs Anker, read the minutes of the last Group General Meeting, which were approved and adopted.

A financial statement presented by Mrs Jessie White (Treasurer) showed that £85 19s. 8d. had been raised during the year and that after expenditure a balance of £45 14s. 9d. was in hand.  The balance is already earmarked for the purchase of other tents and equipment in order to keep pace with the rapidly growing numbers of the troop.

Mr H Wood (G.S.M.) in his report stated that the Troop had grown from four to over thirty scouts, and the Pack had increased to twenty-four cubs. He also welcomed Mr George as the Pack Akela, and announced that the Troop and Pack has raised £42 during Bob-a-Job week - a record sum.

Then followed the highlight of the evening - the presentation of the Queen’s Scout Award to 17 year old Graham Litchfield of 48 Park Avenue, Rushden, by Dr Hughes, supported by Mr Winters.  Graham is the first member of the Troop to gain the Queen’s Award since the war. After the presentation Dr Hughes congratulated Graham, and expressed the hope that this achievement would encourage others to do likewise.

Refreshments were served by Mrs S Wood and other helpers.

The two junior Scouts then performed the ceremony of Flag Break, demonstrating the correct way to fold and hoist the colours.  Others then demonstrated First Aid, artificial respiration, and how to make a temporary stretcher with poles sacks and rope lashings. Scout activities concluded with an indoor obstacle race, and the evening was closed in the usual Scout way by the lowering of the Colours and Prayers.

Sunday 25 June 1967

The 3rd Rushden St Peter’s Scout Troop was presented with new Queen’s Colours on Sunday 25 June 1967 during the Group’s 32nd anniversary celebration service. The colours were presented by Mrs W J Anker in memory of her late husband, Mr Walter Anker, and were dedicated by the vicar of St Peter’s, the Rev G T Barber.

Among the congregation at St Peter’s Church to watch the ceremony was the group’s first Scoutmaster Mr W Elliott. During the service a tribute to Mr Anker’s life of service and dedication to the Scout movement was paid by the Capt R Denniss, Scout Commissioner, Church Army.  He urged others to follow Mr Anker’s example. An inspection of the troop afterwards was carried out by Lt G H Litchfield R.N., a former Queen’s Scout from the group. Refreshments were served and three candles on a birthday cake were lit by Mr Elliott, Mr H Ward, the present Scout Master, and Martin Underwood, the youngest Scout to represent the past, present and future.
