Outing 16th August 2008 - National Memorial Arboretum
On August 16th 2008 the Rushden & District History Society outing was to the town of Lichfield and followed by a visit to the National Memorial Arboretum at Alrewas in Staffordshire.
On arrival a short introduction to the site was given, in the Chapel on the site, by one of their volunteers.

There are already over 16,000 names inscribed on the walls.





The names of two Rushden men are inscribed on the walls.
The Memorial is for all those who have lost their lives in conflicts since WWII, and already has over 16,000 names with space for another 16,000.

There are two Rushden men commemorated there. Anthony Goodfellow lost his life in 1973 in the Northern Ireland conflict. Carl Smith paid the ultimate sacrifice in 2006 in Iraq.

Everyone was very impressed by the Memorial Project. Although the weather was somewhat dull, we all agreed the trip was very well organised by Brian Shelton and we'd had a good day out.
