Co-operative Fete

The Rushden Co-operative Society on Thursday held their annual fete for the children of members. The children first met in Spencer Park, and then, about 900 strong, including competitiors in the fancy dress parade, marched to the society’s field at Dial Farm, headed by the Rushden Temperance Silver Prize Band. The winners of the fancy dress were: 1 Olive Peacock, Co-op productions; 2 Nellie Gore, push car and roses; 3 Hilda Underwood, Co-op productions; 4 Connie Wrighton, Co-op garden produce; 5 Reg Pendered and Albert Thornton, Wanted, a house; 6 Margaret Bird, Jackie Coogah; 7 Edward Bird, C.W.S. mother’s help; 8 Edward Bayes, costermonger; 9 Mollie Saddler, Indian Belle. Consolation prizes were awarded to all the other competitiors.

Tea was served in the Dial Farm field and subsequently there was a good programme of sports, Mr W Jeacock carrying out the secretarial duties. The judges were Mr G W Coles, J.P., Mrs H Addison, Mr and Mrs Young.

Results:- Boys under 10, 80 yards: 1 Alfred Harris, 2 Eddie Clark, 3 Sidney Robinson. Boys over 10, 100 yards: 1 Sidney Jones, 2 A Barker, 3 A Tew. Girls under 10, 60 yards: 1 Jessie Clark, 1 Doris Hind, 3 Joyce Waite. Girls over 10, 80 yards: 1 Edna Harding, 1 Kathleen Mason, 3 Mabel Neal. Three-legged race, under 10: 1 R Barker and Leslie Rootham, 1 Walter Skelham and S Sawford, 3 Philip King and Harry Clayton. Boys over 10, three-legged race: 1 Reg Clarke and Leslie Curtis, 2 Ernie Sawford and Frank Durham, 3 Bob Whiteman and W Mason. Skipping, under 10: 1 Nellie Green, 2 Lily Coley, 3 Phyllis Clarke. Skipping over 10: 1 Annie Tapp, 2 Winnie Wootton, 3 Edna Beetson.

A gymnastic display was given in the evening by 30 boys, who had been efficiently trained by Mr George Cook, caretaker of the Co-op Hall. Other attractions included a Punch and Judy show, scrambles, balloons, etc., and the Temperance Band played for dancing.
