"Moorland House"
Hayway

In 1873 brothers Thomas and William B Sanders founded Sanders and Sanders, shoe manufacturers, the first premises being two stone built cottages at the top of Station-road. As the business grew they built a factory, but in 1908 built a larger factory in Spencer Road.

He retired from the business in 1925, and died in 1932.

William Benjamin Sanders (born Rushden c1854) married Mary Ann (nee White, born at Moulton, c1856) in 1878. They lived in High Street, before moving to Wellingborough Road, then in 1897 moved again.

‘Moorland House’ was built in 1897, and William and Mary Ann took their growing family to the new house in Hayway.

They had nine children Emily, William B, Florence, Thomas, Ewart, Elsie, Doris, Clarice, and Arthur L in January 1901.

Rushden Echo, 4th July 1924, transcribed by Kay Collins

A Garden Fete in connection with the Rushden Park-road Baptist Church was held on Saturday in the grounds of 'Moorland House' in Hayway, Rushden, by kind permission of Mr and Mrs W B Sanders. It was hoped to wipe of the deficit of £50 on the last year's accounts of the Church. Mr Horace Wright was the energetic secretary of an enthusiastic committee.

The alarming fire at Messrs Sanders and Sanders factory unfortunately put a stop to all the festivities.
