Councillor Charles Bates

Mr Charles Bates
1913-14 & 1924-25
Charles Bates (c1869 Podington), a shoemaker, married Julia Underwood (1868 Yardley Hastings) in 1887.  Charles was a member of the Rushden Urban Council and president of the Rushden branch of the National Union of Boot and Shoe Operatives.

Children of marriage: 

John Edward Bates (1888 Rushden, 1915 Rushden).  His death was recorded in the Rushden Echo Friday 9 April 1915: The death took place on Sunday evening at 8 Denmark Road, of Mr John Bates, aged 27, eldest son of Councillor and Mrs C Bates.  The funeral took place on Wednesday at the cemetery.

Charles William W Bates (1889 Rushden). Charles is reported (by Uncle Tommy) as having a daughter Florrie who married a Richardson.  (A Florence Mary Bates (b1900) married Charles A Richardson in 1925).

Herbert Henry Bates (1894 Rushden).  He married Rose Olive Freeman in 1922.  They had at least one daughter, Violet.

In Rushden cemetery is the memorial inscription: In loving memory of Julia beloved wife of Charles BATES who died July 14 1932 aged 58 years.  In the midst of life we are in death.  Re-united.  Also of Charles BATES who died October 18th 1949 aged 81 years.  See Julia’s obituary in the The Rushden Echo 15 and 22 July 1932.
