'Nurse' Holt
wife of John Holt

Rushden Echo, 27th June 1924, transcribed by Kay Collins

Accident—On Sunday evening Mrs John Holt, of Bencroft Cottages, Bedford-road, Rushden, was cycling along Avenue-road, Court Estate. Wishing to stop to speak to some friends, she applied her brakes rather sharply to pull up. The front brake almost locked the wheel, causing the rear wheel to skid sideways. Mrs Holt was thrown violently to the ground. Her friends ran to her assistance, and she complained of injury to her left arm.

Mr Cyril Desborough, of High-street, went on her cycle to Mr W Holt’s farm, Higham Park, for aid, and Mr W Holt motored the injured lady to Dr Davies’s surgery. The doctor ordered her to Northampton Hospital, and himself accompanied her, Mr Holt driving. With the use of an anaesthetic, Mrs Holt’s arm, which was dislocated at the elbow, was set. She returned to the farm and was put to bed, and we are pleased to say she is about again now.
Note: John Holt was WG Holt's youngest brother I think, but he was not a fit or well man and died quite young. His wife was known as “Nurse Holt” before she married as she had been a Nurse at Creaton hospital, on the Northampton-Leicester road close to Spratton and Holdenby where the Holts mill was. Her claim to fame was that she birthed all the family’s babies.
Bencroft Cottages were almost opposite Bencroft Grange (see 1900 sale)
