Hospital Contributory Fund

'The Joint Home Hospital & Northampton General Hospital Appeal'

In the 1920’s a penny a week was deducted from the factory workers wages
to provide them with contributions for medical and surgical treatments along
with assistance for specialist treatments and optical glasses.

Hospital Fund—The monthly meeting of the Trades Hospital and Convalescent Home Fund was held in the Manufacturers’ offices on Friday, when Mr F G Deane presided. The issue of letters and orders for December was reported to be: Northampton in-patient 12 (total for the year 151), Northampton out-patient 19 (423), Bedford in-patient 1 (8), transport passes 8 (85), glasses 20 (324), surgical appliances 1 (13), convalescent homes (12). The financial statement showed contributions to be £2,304 19s. 11d., and the expenditure £388 14s. 11d., leaving a balance-in-hand of £1,916 5s.

In 1939 contributions were raised to two pence per week and later to three pence per week.
The target was £20,000, and by 1945-46 £21,320 had been raised of which £11,000 was
from contributions of 6,500 employees working in 9 factories in the town.

3d PER WEEK paid to the Northampton General Hospital Contributory Scheme gives Free Hospital Treatment at the Northampton General Hospital and other hospitals throughout the Country. Benefits also include Convalescent Treatment, Payment of Ambulance Charges, and Grants towards Spectacles and Surgical Appliances.

Schemes covering Private Ward Treatment are also in operation at varying rates of contribution from £1 6s. to £3. 10s. per year.
