Doctors Muriset & Gillespie

Doctor Olivier Armand James Needham MURISET M.B., Ch.B. (Edin.).  

He was born in 1887 at Edinburgh, son of Edmond U. Muriset, and was educated at George Watson's College, Edinburgh and at Edinburgh University.

In 1913, he married Elspeth Caroline, daughter of John Wilson, Edinburgh. He was Chief Tuberculosis Officer to the County Council 1912-21, but he served in Great War as a Captain in the R.A.M.C. from 1915-19.  

Dr. Oliver Armand James Needham Muriset, MB, Ch.B.Edin, physician and surgeon, came to Rushden in 1921.

Doctor Muriset lived at 20 Church Street, taking over the practice of Dr Baker in 1920 and he remained until WWII. He was instrumental in setting up the Cottage Hospital and, like Dr Baker, was Medical Officer of Health to Rushden Urban District Council.

He was in partnership with Dr. J. H. Gillespie. (James Henry married 1925 to Miss Mary V Goldston)

They also took over a practice at Higham Ferrers, and also took patients from Irthlingborough as the invoices above show.

Doctor Muriset retired in 1939.

Nurse Goosey came to Rushden in 1922, after training at Northampton Hospital, and worked as a midwife, and with Dr Muriset. She also retired in 1939.

A Charity was set up in Rushden as “The Doctor and Mrs. Muriset Trust Fund” - To provide amenities and comforts for such old people living within the urban district of Rushden as the president of the Rotary Club of Rushden or should the said Rotary Club cease to exist the chairman for the time being of the Urban District of Rushden shall from time to time select. (Registered charity number: 1047926)
