An ARP War Ambulance taken near St James Northampton

1939 - 1940

At the outbreak of the Second World War (1939/1945), the Ambulance Corps along with the British Red Cross Society were put on full alert and as such we see converted horse boxes used as first aid posts which after the war would be used at large public events. Five of these were converted horseboxes and 513 static first aid posts existed throughout the county.

The picture above also shows a doctor and nurse in attendance, all part of the County Emergency Committee.

ARP Bagde ARP - WVS badge Badges worn by members of the ARP (Air Raid Precautions) and the WVS (Women's Voluntary Services) during the war.

Special thanks to John Harley and John Drage.
