St John Ambulance Brigade
Beaumont Cup & Presentation to Mr Swindall

Rushden Echo, 20th November 1908, transcribed by Kay Collins

Ambulance Work in Rushden
Celebrating a Success – presentation to Supt. Swindall

A coffee supper was held in the Alfred-street schools yesterday week in connection with the Rushden Division of the St. John Ambulance Brigade, the primary object being to celebrate the winning of the Beaumont Cup for the third time in succession by the Rushden Division. The winning team comprised Sergt. Wright and Privates Ambridge, Compton, Beardsmore, and Abbott.

Advantage was taken of the gathering to show, in a practical mannaer the appreciation of the men for Supt. T. Swindall, who has been associated with the division for the last 12 years and who joined as a private, working his way upwards. The presentation consisted of a silver-mounted ebony walking stick, bearing the following inscription:- “Presented to Supt. T. Swindall by the Rushden Division of the St. John Ambulance Brigade 1908.”

Dr. H. S. Baker made the presentation on behalf of the men, and spoke in eulogistic terms of the services of Supt. Swindall to the movement.

Mr. Swindall, who was taken completely by surprise, expressed his appreciation of this token of the men’s goodwill.

Mr. John Claridge moved a vote of thanks to Dr. Baker for attending that gathering to make the presentation, and this was seconded by Sergt. Prigmore and carried.

Supt. Swindall submitted the toast of “The Winning Team” and Sergt. Wright replied.

The Rushden Nursing Sisters made the arrangements for the supper. A social evening followed.
