11 Jan

Re-opened after Christmas holiday and admitted or re-admitted 15 children.

About 160 present in the afternoon.

The Reverend J T Barker visited the school in the morning.  The first day with the partition removed.  Find it difficult to work without a classroom. 

Miss J Packwood visited the school in the afternoon.

18 Jan

The Reverend J T Barker here on Tuesday and Thursday but not on Wednesday.

Commenced on Monday to finally close school door at 2 pm.

The Rev’d J T Barker here on Tuesday & Thursday but not on Wednesday. Commenced on Monday to finally close school door at 2pm. Fires were shut out on Monday.

Had night school 4 nights this week in preparation for the probable difficulty of holiday it at all next week owing to the re-opening of the Church.

The Reverend J T Barker took his lesson as usual this week.

05 Feb

No night school this week.  Holiday on Monday afternoon, Tuesday and Wednesday in consequence of the Church opening.  The Reverend J T Barker, Rev’d Ponsonby and another gentleman visited the school yesterday.

Very slack school indeed.

11 Feb

The Reverend J T Barker and the venerable the Archdeacon of Huntingdon visited the school on Monday.  The Reverend J T Barker gave his usual lesson on Tuesday and yesterday.

George Wagstaffe, a 1st class boy, left last week to become a monitor in Freeman’s School Wellingborough.

18 Feb

Tolerably goo attendance this week, still however many children are absent through illness.

Margaret Packwood home ill with rheumatism since Monday. Mrs Wagstaffe obliged to remain home to nurse a son who is ill.  Weakness in the staff has necessitated a considerable deviation from the timetable.

The Reverend J T Barker with two other gentlemen visited the school this afternoon.

The stove being now fitted in the classroom we shall use it as such tomorrow.

Mrs Wagstaffe and Margaret still absent from school on account of illness. 

Deep snow on Monday keeping many little ones from school.  Better attendances in the afternoon.

Sent books to Allemans to be changed.

Mrs Wagstaffe and Margaret still absent from school on account of sickness, though both will there is reason to hope be able to resume duty on Monday.

Miss Gow from the Infant School has taken the girls in needlework this week.  Many children still absent through sickness the weather being still very trying.

The usual monthly examination on Thursday was not very satisfactory nor complete.

Mrs Wagstaffe’s son much better, she has in consequence returned to school.  Rather better attendance this week the weather being milder.

The Reverend J T Barker gave his usual lessons.

18 Mar

George Clayton a fifth standard boy and one of the first to attend this school has left to go to work.  The Reverend J T Barker took 1st and 2nd classes to Scripture on Tuesday and the 1st class to Grammar yesterday.

Kate Packwood absent through illness since Monday morning.

Mr Bagnall and a lady visited the school on Friday 19th.

The Reverend J T Barker gave his usual lesson on Wednesday afternoon but was not here on Tuesday nor today.  Left school at 3.30 yesterday to assist in moving my furniture to another house.  Charles Claridge absent through illness since Friday last.

Opened school this morning with an attendance of 70.

Opened school on Tuesday and Wednesday but as the attendance was so small the managers advised closing for the week, which I did.

The Reverend J T Barker and F U Sartoris Esq were here on Tuesday last in the morning.  The former was not here however on Thursday. 

Had a test examination on Thursday and passed about 90 per cent.  A rather better percentage than last week.  The failures are mostly among the half timers.

26 Apr

About 150 present this morning.  The Reverend J T Barker at school on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday last week.  Mr A Reynolds off St Martin’s School Lincoln visited the school on Wednesday and Thursday.

The Pupil Teacher’s Examination took place on Saturday at Northampton.

Rather better attendance.  Admitted several infants all over 3 years.

The Reverend J T Barker called at the school this morning for the Examination Schedules.  Passed rather over 90 pc at the usual weekly examination last Thursday.

10 May

The Gov’t Examination took place last Tuesday (4th).  It commenced at 10.15 instead of 9.30 and lasted till 1.15.  Three boys, Wm Margetts, Chs Compton and Sam Robinson were absent from examination the first through illness.  The Reading was not so good as last year.

The Reverend J T Barker was here on Tuesday as well as on Wednesday and this morning.

Met after Whit week.  Good school, about 180 present.  Re-admitted children from the Infant School.

School still very full though several boys have gone weeding.

The Factory Inspector G Hudson Esq. visited the school on the 25th meeting the Reverend J T Barker.

The former is about to prosecute Sam’l Parker for employing a boy without sending him to school.  The Reverend J T Barker visited the school on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in last week.

The Reverend J T Barker gave his usual lessons on 1st and 2nd but could not stay today, Mrs Barker being ill.

Admitted Geo Walker a lad of about 13 who has been to an excellent and expensive school for the last 3 years and now requires to be taught the first four rules.

H M Inspector of Schools W E Currey Esquire paid a visit to the school without notice on Friday last the 4th June.  He heard the Pupil Teachers read and recite and the Master give a lesson.  After a stay of 35 minutes he left at 11.50 to catch a train.  The Reverend J T Barker accompanied him on his visit.

School still very full.  The Managers of the school held a meeting on Saturday the 5th to consider the expediency of raising the school fees throughout the school and to revise the rules of the school.

The Reverend J T Barker gave no lesson on Tuesday 8th, Mrs Barker being very ill.  He has however taken the 1st class in Grammar today.

School still very full, admitted two children.

Experience great difficulty in finding fitting room for the 170 children in the large room.  Much space wasted in the mornings in the new wing.  Think some plan must be adopted to work Standard 1 in that room in the morning.

The registers are now marked at 2.30 in the Infant School instead of 2 as heretofore the New Code 1875 requiring only 1½ hrs for Infant school.

23 Jun

The Reverend J T Barker in London last Thursday so did not give his usual Scripture lesson to the 1st class. I gave them instead a life of Elijah.

Received on Friday 18th 16 copies of Cooper’s Pilot from Allmans, the remainder to follow in a day or two.

Not quite so full this week, about 180 present.  Sent 4 children home during the past few days with ring worm.

The discipline and tone of the school are excellent.  The general results of the Standard Examination are very good.  Arithmetic in particular well done.

The Reverend J T Barker took his usual lesson on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Attendance not nearly so good as last week the weather no doubt having some effect upon it.  Charles Claridge not well on Monday afternoon but was at school again on Tuesday morning.

Not nearly so full a school this week the large number of village feasts in the neighbourhood being no doubt the main cause.

The Reverend J T Barker visited the school on Friday 2nd.

Very small attendance again this week.  Pea harvest and a grand tea yesterday being the chief causes.

Weather still very unsettled so the attendance is still below the average.  The Reverend J T Barker gave his Grammar lesson on Wednesday and his Scripture lesson on Thursday.

27 Jul

Much better attendance this week the weather being much more favourable and the Tea having been advertised to take place on Aug 5th.  Admitted 4 children this week.  Hannah McDonald presented herself for re-admission on Monday; sent her to the Managers for permission to re-enter the school.

Mr Bagnall, the Secretary of the school for this year, visited the school on Friday last.

Attendance still pretty good.

The annual school Treat for Day Sunday and Night school was held in the Hall grounds on Thursday 5th.  462 children sat down to tea.

16 Aug

About 140 children at school this morning, a rather larger attendance than might have been anticipated the harvest having begun in earnest.  The Reverend J T Barker not at school this week.

19 Aug

Broke up for the Harvest holiday the attendance having very much decreased.

04 Oct

Re-opened after the holiday with160 children, about 20 more in the afternoon.  Admitted 5 children.

Opened Night School in the evening, above 50 in attendance.

About the same number of children present as last week.

Sent a boy (Hind) home as his head was very bad.  The poor boy seems to have been much neglected.

Attendance about equal to last week.  Find that two very irregular children are attending an adventure school instead of this.

Ordinary progress.  Admitted one child to the Infant Department.  The weather being very wet and cold is decreasing the attendance especially in the Infant School.

On Tuesday the 26th the Diocesan Inspector examined the school in Scripture.  In the afternoon the children had holiday.

05 Nov

Several children absent with measles.  Admitted one girl on Monday about 11 years old who was not fit for standard 1.  The Reverend J T Barker visited the school today and brought me from London some Dictation and other books.

Mr W Wilkins visited the school this afternoon.

12 Nov

Let the children out at 11 on Thursday to see the hounds throw off at the Moors. The Reverend J T Barker did not in consequence give his usual lesson.

Many children absent through illness. 

Received the Diocesan Inspectors report which was on the whole satisfactory considering that the time of his visit is about the worst possible.

Night School falling off to some extent though many of the scholars are very regular indeed, much more so than in the day school.

Very deep snow on the ground today.  Many day scholars absent in consequence.

Very slack school this week, the weather being very cold and many children absent through sickness.

The Reverend J T Barker visited the school on the 3rd, 4th and today.

The Rev’d Osborne also visited the school today and with the Rector presented the prizes gained at the Scripture examination held on 22nd and 23rd Dec.

07 Jan

Charles Claridge Pupil Teacher in 3rd year did not return to his duty on Monday morning.  On enquiring I found that he was holiday keeping in London.  Not having put in an appearance at the end of the week I reported his breach of discipline to the Managers who will take the matter into consideration.

Very few children in the Infant department the weather being very severe and measles very prevalent.

Night School examination on Thursday 3rd.  45 presented.  Rather better attendance especially in the Infants department.

Mrs Wagstaffe went to visit the Infant school Miss Gow being too ill to be at school.

Progress as usual.  Snow storm yesterday morning decreased attendance.

Mrs Wagstaffe visits Miss Gow’s school daily in consequence of the latter’s continued illness.

Miss Gow better. Mrs Wagstaffe has not visited her school this week.

Ellen Sharp who sat for a scholarship at Hockeril and got a good position on the 1st class list has been appointed Assistant Mistress at the Park Street Board School Wellingborough.

Margaret Packwood absent from school on Monday through illness.  School fuller this week especially in the afternoons.

The Reverend J T Barker visited the school yesterday.

The concert on the 2nd ult. was a success proceeds amounts to over 7£.  After paying expenses the proceeds are to be devoted to the improvement of the school playground.

Took on William Munns and George Wagstaffe as monitors.  The former intends sitting for examination in 2nd year’s papers in April the latter in the 1styear’s.

The Pupil Teacher’s examination took place last Saturday at Northampton.  William Munns and Geo Wagstaffe entered as candidates, the former for 2nd year the latter for 1st year.

Progress as usual.  The Reverend J T Barker and Rev’d A Osborne at school to Scripture.

19 May

The School Examination took place on Tuesday 16th.  Time fixed for examination 9.15, time it began 10.45.  Girls took needlework in the afternoon.

Mr Curry H M I examined Standards 4, 5 and 6 in Grammar and Geography on Wednesday afternoon the 17th.

26 May

The Reverend J T Barker gave a Scripture lesson on Tuesday to 1 and 2.

Mr Curry H M Inspector of Schools finished his inspection of the school on Wednesday 24th May.

The Reverend J T Barker here on Tuesday and the Rev’d A Osborne yesterday to give Scripture lessons to 1 and 2.

Mr Barker called again yesterday afternoon.

Average about 220 this week.

12 Jun

Re-opened the school after the Whitsuntide holiday with 205 children.

19 Jun

Should have entered the admission of 55 children on Monday May 22nd.  The large increase is due to the closing of the Infant School.

Winifred Bollard transferred at the same time with the children.

School fuller this week 220 here this morning.  Cricket match in the afternoon brought the numbers down to 183.

The Rev’d A Osborne at school on Tuesday and the Reverend J T Barker on Thursday.

Winifred home ill on Wednesday Thursday and Friday.

Winifred at school again.  Mrs Wagstaffe in whose room she has worked hitherto informs me that Winifred Bollard is frequently late in the afternoon. 

Yesterday Mrs Wagstaffe was ill and Winifred late both at lessons in the morning and to school in the afternoon.  Winifred was late at lessons again this morning.

06 Jul

Mr G F Packwood visited the school last Friday for a few minutes.  Rather slack school this week there being I am given to understand about 60 village feasts in the neighbourhood.

Mrs Wagstaffe returned to her work on the 3rd in the afternoon though she looked quite unfit for it.

The Reverend J T Barker and another gentleman visited the school on Monday afternoon for a few minutes.  The Rev’d A Osborne gave a Scripture lesson to classes 1 and 2.

Full school on Monday 10th but rather slack in the afternoon there being a Wesleyan tea party at the other end of the village.

The Reverend J T Barker at school on Tuesday to take classes 1 and 2.  234 children at school on Wednesday afternoon and this morning we have still more.

14 Jul

Extremely hot weather, children very troublesome.  Half holiday yesterday afternoon the master and two of the Pupil Teachers having to go to a choral festival at Raunds.

20 July

Full school this week.  Average about 230 to today.  The Reverend J T Barker at school on Tuesday to take the 1st and 2nd classes in Old Test.  Allowed two of the Pupil Teachers to leave school at 3.30 yesterday to go to the annual Sunday School party at Wellingborough.

27 Jul

The Reverend J T Barker visited school on Monday 24th last, on Tuesday I took 1 and 2 in Scripture.  Good average for week.

04 Aug

Took classes 1 and 2 in Scripture on Thursday 27th ult. 

Rather slack attendance on account of the rain this week.

07 Aug

Fair attendance today considering the near approach of the harvest.

Winifred Bollard ill last week so I excused her from lessons.

The tone and discipline of the school are excellent.  The general results of the examination are very good.  The first Standard reading book is too easy.

E Sharp and K Packwood have passed well and W Bollard fairly under Article 19(2).

K Packwood must take the fifth years papers at the next examination as she is now only at the end of the fourth year of her apprenticeship.

The Reverend J T Barker at school yesterday to give his usual lesson.  Winifred home ill yesterday afternoon.

The quarterly meeting of the school Committee took place last Monday night.

On Friday afternoon the 10th inst. the Managers dismissed Winifred Bollard Pupil Teacher in her 5th year for gross immorality.  The disgrace is keenly felt by all of us.

The Rev’d A Osborne gave a lesson to classes 1 and 2 on Tuesday 14th as did the Reverend J T Barker today.

On Monday I engaged Miss Wood to take the place of W Bollard for a time.  Engaged Miss Wood to assist Mrs Wagstaffe in the management of the Infants.  She began duties on Monday 13th.

Progress as usual last week.

18 Dec

Very poor attendance at night School last week.  The Reverend J T Barker and Rev’d A Osborne gave their Scripture lessons to classes 1 and 2 as usual.  Papers having been issued calling a Vestry meeting for the purpose of “considering the advisability of forming a School Board for Rushden”. A preliminary meeting was held in this school on Monday 15th to consider the question.  It was decided unanimously to oppose the formation of a school board to the uttermost.

The Rev’d Osborne gave a Scripture lesson to classes 1 and 2 on Tuesday.  Mrs Barker visited the school on the same day.

Re-opened school after he Christmas holiday with a very good attendance, more than 200 being present.  Admitted several new scholars.  One child brought an increased school fee with a message from her father that the schooling was worth it.  This came from a strenuous advocate for a school board for Rushden.

15 Jan

Full school.  Progress as usual.  Mrs Carter engaged to assist in the sewing.

22 Jan

Mr Osborne gave a Scripture lesson to classes 1 and 2 on Tuesday last.

The Reverend J T Barker visited the school on Wednesday.  He also visited the school this morning.

Full school, children very noisy and troublesome the classes being so large as to be beyond the control of the younger Pupil Teachers G Wagstaffe and W Munns.

Re-opened school this morning after Easter holiday.  Admitted 7 new scholars.  Very full school, especially in the afternoon.

School not quite so full today as last Monday.  Mr Osborne took Mr Barker’s lessons to classes 1 and 2.

23 Apr

Admitted five scholars two of them re-admitted.  They left to go to the Temperance Hall because they leant nothing with us and have doubtless returned because they learnt nothing with them.

Several children brought an increased school fee this morning in consequence of an appeal made by a committee appointed to call on parents.  The Reverend J T Barker out. Mr Osborne takes Scripture in his absence.

F U Sartoris Esq and H Bagnall Esq at school on Thursday last.

10 May

The examination took place on Tuesday 8th inst.  Present 276.  On schedule 200 of whom 196 were present.  Mr Sampson heard the Pupil Teachers give a lesson and examined Standard 1 in Geography and Grammar and Standard2 in Grammar.

15 May

Admitted three children yesterday and lost several the new board school at T[emperance] Hall taking them.

18 May

Broke up at 11.20 for a week’s holiday.

28 May

Re-opened school after Whitsun week with rather slack attendance, only about 190 answering to their names.  Much larger attendance in the afternoon.

H M Inspector Mr Currie inspected the school on Wednesday 30th in Geography and Grammar.  He also heard the Pupil Teachers read and recite.

The Rev’ds J T Barker and Osborne at school on Wednesday and Thursday respectively.  Gave a half holiday this afternoon, all the teachers being engaged in the choral festival at Higham Ferrers.

Admitted several children.  Progress as usual, the average about 210.

Mr Barker and Mr Osborne gave their usual lessons on Wednesday and Friday.

Master went to Crystal Palace on Friday 22nd to the Handel Festival.

“In the Infant room the order and instruction are fairly good but the second class writes too small a hand.  The elder children are in excellent order.  Their attainments are generally satisfactory but spelling in the third Standard is very moderate and writing in the third and fourth wants attention.

Grammar and Geography are fair, sewing is very good.  The repetition for Literature was very well said but the meanings of the words are not properly known.  In the Evening School order excellent, the results are quite satisfactory.”

W Munns and K A Packwood have passed fairly.  The latter is now qualified under both Articles 60 and 79.

W C Bollard’s name has been removed from the register of Pupil Teachers serving in this school.

The Rev’d A E Osborne and Rev’d Barker visited the school on Monday 13th.  Holiday on Tuesday afternoon the children having their annual school treat.  427 children sat down to the first tea, the second being partaken of by other children and about 200 teachers and friends.

Broke up yesterday for 6wks holiday.

New Infant School opened in the middle of the village under the management of the Natl School Committee with Miss Fisk as mistress.  I hear that 43 children have been admitted today.

Government Inspection on Wednesday may 1st.  Standard 1 did very badly in Arithmetic chiefly owing I think to not hearing the sums called out to them.  Mr Currie the Inspector was here on Tuesday morning and again on Wednesday.

Mixed School

The discipline is very good.  Arithmetic is very good in all Standards except the first and sixth.  Handwriting is generally pretty good.  Spelling requires special attention as it is below the mark.  Grammar and Geography are well done.

Infants School

“The school is very well conducted”

One of the scholars for whom an Honour Certificate is claimed does not satisfy the requirements of the Regulations of the 9th of February 1877.

If the Managers intend to retain G Wagstaffe on the staff he must take the fourthyears papers next year and produce an unqualified medical certificate.

Mrs Wagstaffe still ill.  The Rev’d J T Barker has given his usual lessons.  Our examination of the school has produced but moderate results especially in the 3rd Standard.  Standards 1 and 6 much improved.  Spelling still but moderate.

Progress as usual.  Busy making annual return.  School Fees Apr 30 1878 to Apr 30 ’79  £89 6s 3d against £85 17s 7d & £71 18s 9d the two preceding years.  Average attendance 221 against 213 and 202 the two preceding years.  The number on registers same as last year at this time.

Examination to take place tomorrow.  Inspection on Wednesday.  Admitted a little girl this morning.

H M I of School W E Curry Esq. examined the school on Tuesday morning last (the 13th inst.) and in the afternoon the two Infant Departments.  All the scheduled infants were present 56 and 23 and all in standard except about 10.  The results of the Standard examination are of course not yet known but from the children being better prepared than usual we have good reason to hope for a ... size result.

On Wednesday morning the 14th the examination in Geography and Grammar took place and the girls’ needlework examined.  W E Curry several times expressed satisfaction at the answering of the children.

The Rev’d J T Barker was present on both examination days.

Wm Munns received permission from the Education Dept to sit for a scholarship in July.

Moved the children into their Standards for 1879-80 on Monday last the 19th inst.  Find I have 89 children on the first class registers.  Very hard work this week the children being strange to their work and teachers.  Very full attendance, the numbers closely approaching 260 on several occasions.  Had half holiday on Wednesday afternoon instead of after the examination.

Broke up this morning for Whitsuntide holiday.  The Rev’d J T Barker at school when the children left.  Both Wm Munns and Mrs Wagstaffe away through illness.

Re-opened after the holiday with good attendance.  Several children have left school being 13 yrs of age.  Admitted several little children.

Miss Fisk and Mrs Wagstaffe have this morning changed posts.  Miss Fisk has 64, Mrs Wagstaffe 35 present.  Miss Wood has resigned her post and the Managers think of appointing 2 monitors (female).  Mrs Warren appointed assistant sewing mistress in Miss Woods’ place.

Holiday yesterday, most of the teachers being at the Finedon Choral Festival.

This morning sent Wm Chambers home to clean himself, he came back in 5 minutes and reported he had done so.  Found out that he had not been home so punished him for the lie.  His mother has just left the school after free use of her tongue, taking her boy with her.
