Adult School

Wellingborough News, 23rd May 1902, transcribed by Kay Collins

Adult School Outing—On Tuesday a most successful outing was enjoyed by members and lady friends of the Rushden Adult School. Some fifty started in brakes, and were joined by a brake from Wellingborough containing 23 members of the school there, whilst others journeyed on cycles, so that about 100 were present altogether. Through the kindness of Mr S G Stopford Sackville, MP, the party were enabled to visit Drayton Park. The outward journey was cold and somewhat damp, but a hot cup of coffee on arrival soon set matters right, and the party proceeded to enjoy themselves in hearty fashion. Cricket on the splendid ground in the park, bowls, and other games were indulged in, and as the weather cleared the pleasure was enhanced. A capital tea was provided by the committee, and the drive home was greatly enjoyed. The brakes for the Rushden party were supplied by Mr James Sargeant, and that from Wellingborough by Mr J Durrant.

Lord Luke at Adult School - Joint Harvest Festival

Rushden Men’s and Women’s Adult Schools held joint harvest festival services on Sunday, with the visit of Lord Luke, of Pavenham, as an outstanding feature.

In the morning Mr. S. James presided and Mr. S. Hawkes gave an address on “Looking to the future.” Mrs. W. G. Thake sand “The Harvester’s Goodnight” and “The Shepherd’s Song,” with Mrs. G. Turner at the piano, and Mr. S. T. Beal played for the hymns.

Miss L. Tuffrey, speaking in the afternoon, described life in the Women’s Land Army, of which she has been a member for three years. Mrs. M. Burton presided, and Mr. J. W. Vorley conducted the Women’s Adult School Choir in four well-chosen numbers, Mrs. Joan Hart accompanying. A recitation “Real Property” was given by Mrs. A. Hooton.

Lord Luke’s address to a crowded evening gathering followed the themes of “Courage” and “Faith.” The St. Cecilia Singers, under Mr. C. T. Francis, opened the service with an introit, “The Lord’s my Shepherd,” and afterwards sang “Strike the Lyre” and “Music All Powerful.” Mr James presided. Mrs. Turner was pianist and Mr. P. Bridgment thanks all who had taken part in an inspiring day.

The gifts of produce, with which members of the Women’s School had decorated the platform, were sold on Monday evening by Messrs. B. Page, G. Tebbutt and S. James.
