Northampton Mercury, 29th November 1901, transcribed by Kay Collins
Opening of the New instituteThe eagerly-anticipated Institute has become an accomplished fact, for on Thursday week the rooms, which are over the Windward Cycle Works, were opened by Mr G Denton, Chairman of the Urban Council, who expressed the hope that the venture thus started in a small way would prosper. He thought that in a place like Rushden, where the majority are employed in factories, there was a need for mental recreation and healthy amusement. Dr Durance proposed thanks to Mr Denton, Rev M E Parkin seconding and the vote was carried with enthusiasm. Mrs Chas Smith then asked Mr Denton to accept the first cup of tea; after which the company adjourned to the various rooms, where they soon made themselves at home with the various games provided. The reading-room was well provided with books and papers, which were highly appreciated by a large number. During the evening nearly 100 gave in their names as members.
