Tennyson Road County Modern School

The School House Names


The four Houses of the School were named after notable families from local history, three from Higham Ferrers and one from Rushden, though I only remember once being told of any of their history.  We have included for interest, and my own personal ‘whim’, a few notes and heraldic details.

CHICHELE
Yellows

Henry Chichele of Higham Ferrers Archbishop of Canterbury in 1414.  Founded the college, Grammar School and Bede House in his home town.

Or, a chevron between three Cinquefoils, all gules.

DeFERRERS
Reds

William de Ferrers, 5th Earl of Derby.  Succeeded to the Peverel lands, including Hecham (Higham Ferrers), died 1247.

Vaire, or and gules, a bordure argent, charged with eight horseshoes, sable.

PEVEREL
Blues

William Peverel, one of the most favoured of William the Conqueror’s followers and perhaps an illegitimate son.  Extensive landowner after the Conquest, including Hecham (Higham Ferrers).

Gules – two lions, passant guardant, or.

SARTORIS
Greens

Frederick Urban Sartoris.  Purchased Rushden Hall in 1844, sold by his grandson Arthur Hugh Sartoris, last Squire of Rushden, in 1929.

Party per pale, dexter, a lion rampant, or.  Impaling sinister per fess azure, in base or.  Two bars azure, in centre chief point, a mullet or.  For the third son.

Heraldic colours:
Or – gold, Argent – silver, Gules – red, Sable – black, Azure – blue
