Decathlon at Rushden school
Watched by other competitors, Timothy Strickland puts the shot in the decathlon at Rushden Secondary Boys' School on Wednesday.
Mr Roy Tomlin, the school's games master, decided to add the decathlon event to the sporting programme this year for the first time. The event is held over two days and was completed yesterday.
The boys, who ages ranged from 12 to 15, competed on a voluntary basis. Every other year the school used to hold a pentathlon of five events, and Mr. Tomlin thought the decathlonten eventswould be an even more severe test of skill and stamina.
The boys competed in the 100 yards, the 440 yards, mile, and 110 yards hurdles, the long jump, the high jump, pole vault, shot, discus, and javelin.
