Rushden Echo, 6th December 1912
Beaconsfield-place

A Fire occurred in Beaconsfield-place on Monday, when one of the thatched cottages belonging to Dr. Owen was razed to the ground. Fortunately the house was unoccupied, and the damage was confined to the one house only, thanks to the smart work of the Rushden firemen, although the house adjoining was tenanted, and it was thought advisable to remove the furniture from the upper rooms. The cause of the fire is not definitely known, but it is thought that the thatch of the cottage was ignited by a spark from a bonfire close to, made by some boys. The Fire Brigade responded smartly to the call, which was received at about 4.50, and turned out with the hose cart and ladders in less than four minutes. The men got to work very smartly and by steady persistence soon had the outbreak well in hand and the fire was quickly extinguished.
