Rushden Echo & Argus, Nov 23^th 1923

Collision - Miss Doris Whitby, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T. Whitby, of 6 Fitzwilliam Street, was cycling from Station Road into High Street towards the church on Monday, about 4 p.m., when, through being too near the corner, she was knocked down by a Sunbeam car belonging to a Leicester man named Lea. The driver had no chance to avoid the young lady, but happily the car was going comparatively slowly. Mr. J. Vander-Heyden, jun., happening to be near, ran to the assistance of the cyclist (then unconscious), picked her up, and took her by the car to Dr. Owen’s surgery, where Dr. Owen attended to the injuries, which included a scalp wound and slight concussion. Miss Whitby was then conveyed home, and the family’s medical adviser (Dr. Muriset) has since attended. The patient is recovering, but she suffered a great deal from the injuries to her head. Her bicycle was practically ruined.

Rushden Charabanc in Accident - A Police Court Sequel at Sharnbrook
A sequel to the accident in Whit-week at Milton Ernest, in which a charabanc belonging to Mr Frederick Clarke, Higham-road, Rushden, was involved with a doctor’s car, occurred at Sharnbrook Petty Sessions on Friday last. Dr Norman H Bolton, of Hampstead, was charged with driving a motor-car in a manner dangerous to the public at Milton Ernest on June 11th.

Mr Frederick Clarke, in evidence said that the doctor’s car, in trying to pass, struck the front wheel of the charabanc, mounted the grass at the side of the road and landed in a ditch. Two passengers were injured.

Arthur Carr, of 56, High-street, Rushden (a cyclist who witnessed the accident), Fred Twelvetree (carpenter, Higham Ferrers), and P.C. Robinson, of Milton, also gave evidence.

Accused was fined £5 and ordered to pay witnesses’ costs.

Car Overturns - A lucky escape from injury was experienced by a London lady, on Saturday, whilst motoring to Sheffield on the Bedford and Rushden road just inside the Northants border. Her car skidded and turned a double somersault. The accident occurred about 4 o’clock. The driver was thrown out but was not seriously injured, and after a short stay at Mrs. Whittemore’s farm house, was taken back to London by friends. The car was taken into Rushden.
