Harry Knight was born in Rushden in 1866, son of Edwin, a cattle dealer, and Martha. He was a carpenter and builder by trade in 1885 and by 1891, he was widowed and living in Alfred Street, with his daughter Elsie aged 2.

In 1901 Harry aged 35 was an architect and surveyor, living in Rectory Road, with his second wife Annie, daughter Elsie, son Percy, and their youngest daughter Evelyn who was born at Downham, Norfolk, in 1896.

The family was back in Rushden by 1897 when Harry advertised his business in Kelly's directory as a "builder and contractor, undertaker & coffin furniture factor, surveyor, house & estate agent, plans & specifications &c, agent for Northern Fire Assurance Co."

In 1898 he drew up the plans for two new shops in High Street, and in 1903 he drew plans for an extention to the Zion Chapel in Station Road.

These adverts below show he was living in Rectory Road, probably called Rectory Cottage, accessed from a passage access next to Mr Ward's. The works was in the Old Temperance Hall on the corner of Park Road and Newton Road.
