Nigel takes a break

Nigel Groom was the younger son of Frank and Joyce Groom, who lived in Rushden road, Wymington.

He attended Wymington Voluntary Primary School until the age of eleven, and then went to Harrold Secondary Modern School. After four years he left in 1963 and decided to join the motor trade.

This would involve serving his apprenticeship at Townsends Garages Ltd in High Street South, Rushden. They also had a second garage which was in Wellingborough Road. (This closed circa the late 1960's, now the Texaco/Londis filling station.)

After about ten years at Townsends garage Nigel fancied moving on and went to work at Hanson's Garage which was along the A6 towards Bedford; the premises are now used by Stable Hire Ltd.

The next move came a bit quicker; after staying at Hanson's for about six month's Nigel made the move up Newton road to work with Neil Burt motors, to what was Arthur Sanders the builders "top yard". (now a block of flats called Oliver Close)

The next move was far more major as he decided to work for himself. The first premises occupied were in Little Street, in 1974 and this is where Orbit Tyres started out before re-locating to their current headquarters in Skinners Hill, Rushden. Fifteen years would pass before the final location was made, and this was to be in 1989 as he went to his unit at the end of Quorn road, Rushden.

This area was no stranger to the smell of engine oil and fuel pumps, as the premises of "Stiffy Johnson" were on the opposite side of the road. They were well known for their coach business that ferried many a happy traveller around the county and beyond. (This is now the current home of "Action 2 Mobility".) And if you filled your fuel tank up with Esso petrol the pump attendant would give you a free plastic window sticker that had mock bullet holes on it, this was then displayed on your rear window. If required he would even check your oil level and possibly clean your windscreen for you.

So at the age of 68, former Wymington man, Nigel Groom decided to retire from his garage business situated in Quorn road in Rushden.

Seen here in these shots is customer and friend Michael Norton, who you may remember as one of the window cleaners in the town?

The doors finally shut for business on Thursday 24th March, 2016, and Nigel has decided that he will occupy his well earned leisure time by travelling around with his wife in his camper van, seen here in some of the photos.

The premises are still owned by his former boss Mr Neil Burt.
