Rushden Industrial Co-operative Society

'Divi Day' came twice a year. Whatever you had spent in the previous 6 months was totalled up and the dividend was decided at the half-yearly meeting of the Members and this was then paid out on a particlaur day.

Everyone looked forward to Divi Days as they would have a bit extra to spend. The first Divi Day of the year was in June and the extra would be used perhaps to buy some holiday clothes, and the second came in November when Christmas was an extra expense.

On Divi Day people would queue up at the Banking Hall to claim their money.

The two slips pictured, were found inside a book, so the money was not collected. One is for 48 pence and the other for 42 pence. Britain had gone over to decimal currency on February 15th 1971, the year before these vouchers were issued.

Below the Co-op Office Building, between High Street & Rectory Road, stood behind the High Street Drapery Shop & The Co-op Hall. The Banking Hall was on the ground floor, to the right, inside the double doors.
