MR. J. W. COOKE
MR. J. W. COOKE, grocery department manager, Rushden Society, died on Monday last week.

He entered Kettering Hospital on the previous Thursday for treatment estimated to take about ten days but his condition worsened at the week-end, and he failed to recover. Mr. Cooke started work as a junior in the grocery department and served in that department for the whole 46 years of his working life.

MR. H. WARING
A FORMER correspondent of the "Co-operative News," Mr. Horace Waring, aged 72, has died. He was also a member of Rushden Society's committee from 1934 to 1946 and a member of Rushden Urban District Council and the town's chief citizen, 1945-6.

Mr. S. Downing, Irchester
THE funeral service was held on Tuesday at Irchester Parish Church of Mr. Stanley Downing, of 24 Gipsy, Lane, Irchester, who died in the Radcliffe Infirmary, Oxford on Friday. He was 54. Mr Downing had worked as manager and buyer in the drapery department of the Rushden Co-operative Society since 1947. Previously he had brrn with the Burton Latimer and Dudley Co-operative Societies.

Beveaved is his wife, Mrs Mary Ann Downing. The funeral service was followed by cremation at Ketering.

Death of Mr. C. E. P. Elkington
MR. Charles Edward Percy Elkington, manager and buyer of Rushden Co-operative Society's men'swear department, died during the night at his home, 85 Portland Road, Rushden. He was 63.

Mr. Elkington had been employed continuously by the Co-operative Society, with the exception of the war years, since he left school in 1912. He was due to retire in about a year's time.

He was appointed manager when the society's new men'swear premises, at 47 High Street, were opened in 1935. He had been a member of the Co-operative Employees' Benevolent Fund Committee since its formation in 1945.

Mr. Elkington was wounded while serving with the Northamptonshire Regiment in France during the first world war. In the last war he was a member of the Home Guard.

He was interested in football and at one time captained the town's Thursday team.

He leaves a widow, two sons, and three grandchildren. The funeral is expected to be held early next week.

Ex-Rushden councillor dies at 81
FORMER chairman of Rushden Urban Council, Mr. James Herbert John Paragreen, of 22 Montague Street, Rushden, died at Wellingborough Park Hospital last night. He was 81.

Mr. Paragreen who was born at Northampton, was a member of Rushden Urban Council for 18 years, and was its chairman from 1948-49. It was during this year that he performed the opening ceremony of Rushden War Memorial Hospital, Hayway, Rushden.

A member of the Higham Ferrers and Rushden Water Board for ten years, Mr. Paragreen's chairmanship of the board coincided with his year of office as chairman of the council.

A member of St. Peter's Church, Rushden, Mr. Paragreen was for many years vice-chairman of the Parochial Church Council. For forty years he was a member of Rushden St. John Ambulance Brigade.

He was elected to the board of management of Rushden Co-operative Society in 1933, and retired after serving nearly twenty years. During this time he was vice-chairman of the board for six years under the presidency of the late Mr. E. A. Sugars.

A keen gardener, he was particularly fond of flower growing.

His widow, Mrs. Elsie Paragreen, and two sons, Mr. Albert Paragreen and Mr. Denis Paragreen, are bereaved. The funeral arrangements are to be announced later.

LABOUR COUNCILLOR DIES
A 64-YEAR-OLD district councillor died at Kettering General Hospital yesterday. Mr Arthur Watts, Labour councillor for Rushden's East Ward on East Northants Council, was taken ill at his home, 16 Gloucester Crescent, Rushden.

This morning, his widow, Lily, said her husband had been devoted to helping people.

The couple had been married 43 years. Mr Watts also leaves three daughters and six grandchildren.

Mr Watts was a member of the town's trades council and a schools governor.

He was born in the town and worked at the Co-operative shoe factory for half a century. He was due to retire later this year.

Ex-Co-op chief dies
THE former manager of the Co-operative grocery shop in Rushden, has died at the age of 70. Mr Frederick Langley, of Bedford Road, Rushden, retired from the Co-op grocery department in High Street, in 1969, after 46 years with the society. During his time with the society, he became well known for his art work, and at one time held classes to teach staff poster and display techniques.

He leaves a widow, Marjorie, and a daughter, Cicely.

A funeral service will be held at Rushden St Mary's Church on Tuesday, followed, by cremation at Kettering.
