George Carter
Grocer
George Carter had just one hearth in 1662 when the Hearth Tax was listed, and he had prospered well, having issued this coin inscribed "George Carter of Rushden - 1666 his half peny" and three hearths by 1670.

He married Hannah in about 1660 and two of their children were baptised at St Mary's Church, Roger in 1669 and Susanna in 1671. But there were more children. Two daughters were married before 1691 and there was also an elder son, and a younger daughter.

When their father died in 1691, his wife had already died, but their burials are not extant in St Mary's records, the Parish Register being deficient.

In taking care of his affairs the children renounced the right to take out Letters of Administration, in favour of the principal creditor, one William Trigg of Irthlingborough. This document tells us that in 1691 George's daughter Elizabeth was married to Mr Walker, daughter Mary had married Mr Hall, there was a son George, then Roger and Suzanna whose baptisms are recorded at St Mary's Church, and also a daughter Anna.

William Trigg and William Barwick took an inventory of all the goods and chattels at the homestead and valued his estate at £47.10s. 0d.
