Elsie Lovell was born in 1888, at Rushden, the daughter of James and Frances. Her father, a shoemaker, had died before Elsie married Herbert G Buttling on 26th September 1910, at St Peter's Church. Herbert, two years her junior, was a boot examiner, the son of a railway foreman.

Elsie first began advertising as a music teacher, at 61 Midland Road, in 1920. Four years later she was a woollen draper, then she moved to 116 High Street, and was trading there as a draper. The postcard below dates from the 1930s when she was styled as a children's outfitter.

In the 1950s the shop was run by Mrs. Robinson (Elsie's daughter) and her daughter Pat. In 1985 Jim Osborne took over the premises to extend his shop.
