Church Hall Road Post Office
Premier Store

Post Office opened here early 2023 - built as a Co-op store in 1960.

I am sure there will be many people living in Rushden who will welcome the good news of the opening of a Post Office away from the High Street?

It came in the form of a replacement for what was the Grangeway Post Office. This closed in the early part of 2020, when McColls newsagents closed. Since then the building has been re-occupied by another business.

The new counter moved to the Premier Store at 2 Church Hall Road, Rushden, NN10 9PA, and was renamed Church Hall Road Post Office. This was opened at 1 pm on Thursday 19th January, 2023.

The opening hours should be a big attraction too: Church Hall Road Post Office will be open daily offering a generous 70 hours of Post Office service over the week. The opening hours will be Monday to Sunday 8am to 6pm.

It does seem like bit of good news for a change for Rushden, and I am sure that all parties will benefit from this comprehensively stocked store being the new Post Office counter.

The Main Post Office building in College Street had been in use since 1940, following relocation from what is currently the HSBC Bank. (The Midland Bank).

But Circa 1995, the Post Office counter service moved into what was the Budgen's supermarket store. That became Wilkinson’s, but after several years had another move, this time to the High Street, to Cherry’s Pharmacy.

The sorting office is still located at the rear of the old Post Office building in College Street.

Rushden used to be blessed with numerous branches, in the different compass points of the town.

If you were not aware of their locations, let me recall what I can still remember: Wellingborough Road had a branch, (now the Classic bike shop), whatever the weather, there would be always be a stoic group of pensioners waiting before they opened, to get their clutches on the weekly pay out.

Next to the Welcome Inn in Irchester Road had its own counter in the convenience store. As mentioned, the Grangeway Post Office too, opposite Abbott Funeral Care we could use the Bedford Road counter, moving up Newton Road, their local Post Office was located on the corner with Hayden Road. Next to it was was the machinery plant department for Arthur Sanders builders. That site is now flats, and is called Oliver Close.

And the far flung outpost on the corner of Avenue Road and Newton Road was a welcome addition. According to older Kelly’s Directories, there were other previous branches about the town.

As of 3rd. April 2023, postage stamp prices for letters are:

1st Class from £1.10

1st Class Signed For from £2.60

2nd Class from 75p

2nd Class Signed For from £2.25

So from now on, the Church Hall Road Post Office is going to be a welcome asset, and I am sure they look forward to being of help and service to so many.
