Ekins Family at Yelden

(back) Dinah, Miriam, (front) ?, mother Emma, Catherine

Joseph Ekins was born at Riseley BDF, and worked as an agricultural labourer, probably at Yelden, where he met and married Emma Campion of Yelden, in 1872.

In 1881 his brother John aged 15 was living with them at Yelden, and Joseph and Emma now had Thomas born 1876, Mary A (Miriam) in 1879 and Alfred in 1880. The 1891 Census tells they also had Catherine in 1884, Dinah 1887, Charles in 1888, Sam in 1890, and William was born in 1898. [William married Nellie Ekins in 1923, and had three children: Joe, Grace & Jean.]

possibly Alfred Ekins and Charlotte

possibly Alfred Ekins

Daughter Catherine had moved by 1901 to 39 Church Street, Rushden, where she was servant to John Woodward, a plumber.

Catherine (known as Kitty) married Charles Henry Pickering of Swineshead BDF, who was also living in Rushden. They had one son, Cyril born in 1907. Together they had opened their house to take in visitors who came to appear on stage at the newly opened Royal Variety Theatre. When Charles served in WWI in India, Catherine continued to take in guests. Charles sent some postcards home to show her some of the sights in Delhi.

Miriam moved to Beccles and married Bertie Scarle, working as housekeeper to the author Adrian Bell. Dinah married a Mr Croot and lived on Higham Hill.
