Irchester Choir-boy Gives his Life for his Country – Under Age

Pte Sidney Whiteman, 1/4th Northants, who resided with his grandmother at High-street, Irchester, has been killed in action. The deceased was only sixteen and a half years old and had been in the Army six months. Before joining he worked at Messrs J Hyde Ltd., Rushden. He was well known in Irchester and was in the church choir. His friends wrote to the War Office telling them of deceased’s age, but stated that he could stay in the Army if he desired. The authorities asked him what he wished to do and he said he wished to follow his regiment.
