Rushden Echo, 15th September 1916, transcribed by Kay Collins

Mr J S Newell, of 6, North-end, Higham Ferrers, has received news from official sources that his third son, 22547 Pte. Peter Paul Newell, Northants Regt., is posted as missing, place and date not stated. It is a month yesterday since any communication was received from the missing soldier, and his relatives had begun to feel anxious concerning him, and to fear that he had met with some mishap. The official message that he is missing was received on Wednesday morning.

Pte. Paul Newell enlisted last November, when 28 years of age. He celebrated his 29th birthday in the trenches last July, having gone to the front in April. He was employed prior to joining the colours by Mr Roberts, currier, Higham Ferrers.

His brother, Pte. Percy Newell, Northants Regt., was wounded on July 14th this year at Trones Wood, and subsequently succumbed to his wounds on July 22nd. Mr Newell has three other sons with the colours—Pte. Sidney Collis Newell, Royal Fusiliers, at present in Scotland, Driver James Horace Newell, R.F.A., stationed at Harrogate, and Pte. Leonard Herbert Newell, A.S.C., now on his way to one of the fighting fronts.

Mr Newell and family are in much anxiety concerning Pte. Paul Newell, and would be glad of any further information concerning him that any of his comrades can send them.

Father’s Third Bereavement

Mr. J. Newell, of 7 North-end, Higham Ferrers, whose son, 22547 Pte. Peter Paul Newell, of the Northants Regt., has been missing from his regiment since August 17th 1916, as reported in the “Rushden Echo” at the time, has now received information from the Record Office, Warley, that his son’s death must now be presumed.

The late Pte. Newell was 28 years of age, and enlisted in November 1915, going to France in the following April. Before joining up he was employed by Mr. Roberts, currier, Higham Ferrers.

Two more sons are serving, Pte. S. C. Newell, Royal West Kents, who is France, and Driver J. Newell, R.F.A., at present stationed on Salisbury Plain. A son-in-law, Gunner F. Holman, R.G.A., is stationed at Bexhill.
