An honoured and beloved resident of Raunds has passed away in the death, which took place on Wednesday, of Mr. John Horrell, of The Maples, Raunds, founder of the firm of Messrs. John Horrell and Son, boot manufacturers, of Raunds. The funeral will take place tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon in the Wesleyan burial ground. The deceased’s wife, who was a sister of Mrs. B. Vorley, of Rushden, died about 14 years ago. Mr. Horrell leaves one son, Mr. John Cecil Horrell, who has for some years—since the retirement of his father—been the head of the firm, and two grandsons, Mr. Eric Horrell and Mr. Leslie Horrell. Deceased was 86 years of age, and until quite recently had been able to get about.
A native of Higham Ferrers, Mr. Horrell as a youth removed to Raunds to join the office staff of Messrs. W. Nichols and Son, and eventually became the general manager. In 1888 he left the firm to start in business for himself, and in this step he was conspicuously successful, securing his share of the Government contracts and building up a large and prosperous concern.
