Lived and Died like a Hero – Wymington Sergeant’s Death
Mrs Fuller, of New Wymington, has now received official news (see page 7) confirming the death of her son Sergt. H. Fuller, of the 2nd Bedfordshire Regiment. It briefly states that Sergt. Fuller was killed in action on May 16th. Mrs Fuller has received the following letter from Pte C Pridmore, of the 2nd Border Regiment, to whom Sergt. Fuller spoke his last words. He writes:

“Just a few lines hoping this will cheer you up a bit. The last words your son spoke to me were ‘Take care of yourself, chum, and hope you have good luck. Let my dear mother know as soon as you get a chance.’ All the lads in his company thought the world of him. They told me he was a good fellow. Your son lived and died a hero”.

Private C. Pridmore, of the 2nd Border Festubert fight, where he was wounded and his comrade was killed.

He says: "I am writing a bit of my experiences in the trenches and in the charge we made at Festubert. We got our orders to go over the top, as we call it in the Army. My regiment, the gallant old 55th, the 2nd of the Border Regiment, was over the parapet in no time, with me going on in front with the first company, because I am a bomb thrower. We got a good bombing from old Kaiser Bill's crack regiment, of which I don't think much. If they call them the Prussian Guards I don't think much of them. My comrades and I were sent to bomb them out of the communication trench. We lost very heavily.

The old grenade throwers got a bit of a rough time, but with good spirits we bombed them out of the communication, and we held it. I have been in previous charges, but not one like this. I was talking to Sergt. Fuller, of the Bedford Regiment, when he got killed, the Sergt. Fuller that lives against my brother at New Wymington. A shell struck him, and I said, 'Here goes to avenge my good old towney.' Sergt. Fuller was a good soldier, and liked by all his regiment, who knew him well. Sergt. Fuller died a hero's death. He was always a hero. Every time his regiment went over he led them like a man. I think Sergt. Fuller was a good man to all his comrades, as I know most of his platoon with them working with us in all the trenches we go in. I think all the people of Rushden and Wymington will be proud of my dear old chum, Sergt. Fuller."
