Congregational Chapel - Wollaston

after the fire
The Old Congregational Chapel after a fire in 1971

The chapel, stood behind houses on the E side of the High Street. It was built in 1752 and had rubble walls topped with brickwork. The church was formed as an Independent in 1788.

Originally it was about 30ft by 17ft, but was added to in the late 18th century, also adding a gallery, and in the mid 19th century the roof was raised somewhat. The wide west front was three bays, a round arched door way and windows, with a datestone 1752. The southern extension had a second doorway and window above. Two windows in the north are thought to have flanked a pulpit and a small doorway below one of the of the windows led to an early 19th century vestry. The congregation ceased to meet in the early 20th century. A fire caused extensive damage.
