Raunds - Shoetrade notes

Rushden Echo, 8th February 1901, transcribed by Kay Collins

Army Work—Most of the Raunds contractors have tendered for a portion of the 500,000 pairs of army boots required during the ensuing six months. The interim between now and the acceptance of the tenders is being filled up by the issue of the supplemental orders which have been materially added of late.

Rushden Echo, 10th May 1901, transcribed by Kay Collins

Several New Factories, chiefly for Army contractors, are being erected at Raunds. In course of erection are factories for Mr. Lawrence, Mr. Black, Messrs. Stubbs and Chapman, and Messrs. Clark and Hayne.

Rushden Echo, 15th January 1904, transcribed by Kay Collins

The factories have been re-opened this week, but short time is the rule. The unemployed are somewhat numerous.

Messrs Phillips and Co., Raunds, have secured part of a contract for the supply of boots to the Watch Committee of the Gravesend Town Council.

Staple Trade—Earnest hopes are being expressed that the forthcoming issue of Government orders will have the effect of improving trade at Raunds, many men being now on short time and some out of work altogether.

Rushden Echo, 7th August, 1914, transcribed by Gill Hollis

Army Boot Trade - Raunds shoe manufacturers who were enjoying their holidays during the weekend hurriedly returned early this week to cope with the expected rush of Government work. A number of them had appointments with Government officials on Tuesday, and it is anticipated that the Raunds factories will be running at their utmost capacity.

Big Contracts for Raunds
Government Orders Placed Locally
Boot Factories Working Overtime

In spite of the depression that has been felt by the boot trade as a whole, Raunds manufacturers have been rather fortunate, most factories working full time during the past few months, and in some cases overtime has been in vogue. Most of them, however, closed down for a week’s holiday at Christmas, but will reopen with better prospects than was the case last year.

During the past few weeks local manufacturers have been fortunate in securing large Government contracts, which, extending over the coming year, will form a good basis for the staple industry of the town. The new contracts included the following:

War Office—ankle boots, etc., Messrs Adams Bros. (Raunds), R. Coggins and Sons Ltd. (Raunds), and Tebbutt and Hall Bros. Ltd. (Raunds).

Office of Works—boots, Messrs. Adams Bros. (Raunds).
