Higham Roman site excavated by Ernest Greenfield in June -July 1961, for the Ministry of Works. Found by building works.
A Roman settlement, with significant finds, was discovered in 1961.
The foundations of a Roman building was discovered, the whole field had plenty of pottery and other areas of stone. Workmen found, some skeltons. The central building was excavated by E Greenfield for the MOW [the first training excavation for Ian Meadows]. (E. Greenfield was, brought to excavate it as it was thought to be a shrine, as he had, dug at Brigstock.)
A North Sea gas trench skirting the W and N sides, was also dug.
A very extensive site, although not a great occupation intensity.
