Roman site excavated by Ernest Greenfield in June -July 1961

Higham Roman site — excavated by Ernest Greenfield in June -July 1961, for the Ministry of Works. Found by building works.

A Roman settlement, with significant finds, was discovered in 1961.

The foundations of a Roman building was discovered, the whole field had plenty of pottery and other areas of stone. Workmen found, some skeltons. The central building was excavated by E Greenfield for the MOW [the first training excavation for Ian Meadows]. (E. Greenfield was, brought to excavate it as it was thought to be a shrine, as he had, dug at Brigstock.)

A North Sea gas trench skirting the W and N sides, was also dug.

A very extensive site, although not a great occupation intensity.

Ian Meadows was digging the Chester Farm site (2016 the excavtions fo the house site
were closed, but work was continuing on the wider area, trying to discover the
East Gate of the Roman settlement there)
