St John Ambulance Brigade
Medals

medal group reverse

1. Jubilee 1897 - St John Ambulance issue - 'PRIVATE A. CHURCH'

2. Coronation Medal 1911 - St John Ambulance issue - 'SGT. A. CHURCH.'

3. Order of St John Service Medal - 'SERGT. A. CHURCH. HIGHAM FERRERS DIV: WELLINGBORO CORPS 1912.'

The first public first aid duty carried out by Rushden members was Queen Victoria’s 1897 Jubilee. Members of the Higham Ferrers unit would also have been present on this occasion (in London) as demonstrated by the award of the first medal.

The Service Medal was awarded for 15 years efficient service and the bars were awarded for a further five years. This mean Church would have joined St John circa 1897 and was a member until at least 1922. The Service medal shown is quite a scarce example as it has a ring suspender, which in 1913 was changed to a bar as this better accommodated the additional service bars.
