Souvenir of the 700th Anniversary of the
First Borough Charter
and of the Festival of Britain 1951

HIGHAM FERRERS DRAMA WEEK
commending September 24th

The 700th Anniversary Celebration and the Festival of Britain in Higham Ferrers will conclude with performances of a play, specially written for the occasion.

“THE BOY WILL DO”

Based on the life of Henry Chichele it tells, simply but impressively, the story of the Higham boy who rose from humble origin to become Archbishop of Canterbury.

The scenes are set in Higham Ferrers, Dover, and Canterbury, and portray in brilliant colours some of the events that took place during the reign of the Plantagenets.

The sixteen colourful scenes include :

Henry’s meeting with William of Wykeham in Higham Castle.
Higham Ferrers during the Peasants’ Rising.
The Court of Henry V. before the invasion of France.
The King’s triumphant return and untimely death.
The Archbishop’s approval of plans for the building of Higham College.
Archbishop Chichele’s plan for the erection of his own tomb, and its desecration by the mob.

Nothing quite like this has ever been attempted in Higham Ferrers before, and no effort is being spared to make the production one of the Borough’s most memorable occasions.

A special setting has been designed, which includes a replica of the Chichele tomb at Canterbury.  An up-to-date system of stage lighting is being installed, and authentic costumes are being provided by the Faith Craft Works.

“THE BOY WILL DO”

has been described as “A Picture Book Story – a kind of History Without Tears – which will delight older children and grown-ups alike.”
