Wymington Scouts

Rushden Echo & Argus, 17th August 1934, transcribed by Kay Collins

IN CAMP - The 1st Wymington Boy Scouts spent a most enjoyable week camping at Ryde in the Isle of Wight. The journey down was remarkably good considering the amount of holiday traffic. Besides the usual activities of bathing, etc., various members visited Shanklin, Cowes, Brading and Fishbourne, and seven of them journeyed by across to Portsmouth and visited the dockyards, going over the "Victory," H.M.S. "Hood," the aircraft carrier "Courageous" and submarines, destroyers, etc.. Some cf the boys also saw H.M. the Queen and the Duchess of York when they visited Ryde. Other interesting sights were the big yachts which includes "Bratannia" and the liner "Berengaria."

The camp was in the charge of Group Scoutmaster E. H. Smith.

Extract from a Study of the Village of Wymington:

Only two of the plots were not sold on the Rushden Road; they were at the foot of Rectory Hill, next to Manor Farm paddock. Mr. W. W. Smith of Poplar Farm owned the fields, and after selling the rest of the frontages for the building, he gave one plot to the Boy Scouts in Wymington for the erection of a hut. This was done and its use was shared later by the Girl Guides, but when both organisations disbanded, the hut became derelict and was taken down in 1965.
